Bachmann Lil Tank Loco

Great review and at the price a good start for kit bashing. I don't always understand the negative comments. Surely its designed as a toy and that's what you get. If you have the skills to improve it then its a bargain.
 
Thanks for your kind comments. I like the loco and my sense of its potential has not diminished since it was brought to our attention on this forum.:thumbup:

I intend to make it more into a model (as I have previously mentioned) and it may be source of revitalising my aged Porter (pictured below) if the the vertical motor would fit in.

In further response to Vic's posting, I dug out the Porter and opened it up underneath. It has a different arrangement for the motor (horizontal) and the frame bears many resemblences to the new loco but it is obvious that the moulds have been substantially reworked for the Lil Loco.

However, the wheelbase and cylinder measurements are the same, so a scrap Porter could donate its piston rods etc. I will endeavour to make my own piston rods and slides for the loco.

I also did a size comparison to the old Porter. The new Lil Loco is wider and taller (cabwise).

I did ask this in another thread....
Given the size comparison, do you have any idea of the actual scale of the old Porter?
It does seem small beside the Lehmann/LGB Porter saddle tank, and other locos.
 
I'm no expert, but at 13.5mm (1:22) the Lil Loco scales at about 7'9" in width - and that makes the Porter very dimunitive. If the sleepers on a 3ft gauge line are around 6ft then the porter is not much wider - say 7ft. So it will be 1:22.

As the true(ish) scale of 3ft lines works out at 15mm per foot, only the Spectrum range are supposedly correct.
