Evening all,

If I had a loco that has been fitted with a completly unknown DCC chip that has been operating on a Bachmann system, should it work correctly on an MTS3 system?

It might work but the function mapping will most probably be different.

You should at least get control of speed though...

Yes will work. You may not get as many functions ie if sound is on 20, then you only have up to number 9, so as others have said you will need to remap.

One risk is that it is a cheap decoder that can't take the 22v of MTS3. Do you have the MTS programming software? If so then the mfg ID should be recognized if it is Massoth or an LGB decoder.
If you run it on your system and it runs then quits that would indicate a decoder shutting down due to overload.
Otherwise it should work fine. You may also need to adjust the speedsteps (14,28) if the lights flicker or act weird.
