Attaching wires to LGB brush holders

Is it possible to solder wires directly to LGB brush holders? Or is it better to solder the wire to some kind of conductive metal strip (e.g. brass) and locate this firmly against the holder?

Thanks

You can solder them. I have some here, but I didn't do the soldering so no tips from me I am sorry to say.

No, solder a wire straight to the side - use a low melt solder with separate flux makes it a bit easier.

It does defy the basic principle of soldering, which is to have a good mechanical fix before soldering, but it's easy enough :nod::nod:

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not the best (understatement of the day) when it comes to soldering so didn't simply want to have a go and get frustrated at my failure if the task was actually impossible. Finding out that someone else has done this is very encouraging.

If you clean the area you are going to solder to with a bit of fine emery / wire-wool / needle-file,, it will help..

Just to clarify, what we're talking about here is the holders for the carbon plungers that pickup off the wheel backs, not the motor brushes in a Buehler motor?

Assuming I'm correct in that, then I've soldered wires directly to the pickup holders in a Hartland motor block (when converting it to DCC), to replace the thin brass wire contact strips that normally make the connections.... shouldn't be any different in an LGB one....?

Jon.

I would 'tin them' first outside of the holder, then slide them in. The tips on cleaning with a fibre pen and using flux are good.

Tinning first after a good clean helps reduce the heat needed to solder a wire to them in the holder
