Arosaish Bahn

But isn't Stewie dead-rail? - So surely the catenary will be cosmetic, rather than practical?

The conventional wisdom is also that catenary and DCC, don't make good bed-fellows.

Considering the ESET has been in operation with conventional copper wire for over 9 years without wire replacement and is still operating though not documented on this forum any longer. its amusing to see other opinions here. It will be fine Grizzmo.
I was basing my ideas off of what I had seen with the ESET and the Ruschbahn and was intending a setup based off ideas from both railways to look something like the cat on the Arosa bahn. The Eset uses maybe 2.5mm solid conductor (from old mains power cable)? Could be smaller cable looking at it again. It has more wildlife to deal with than I have and I reckon would have a very similar climate to here in NW Tas.
Tropic Blunder1 Tropic Blunder1 , I didn't realise the Eset had been going for so long. I will have a read through Melbournesparks Melbournesparks thread again.
Even if it only lasts a decade I do have about 40m of 16mm2 sdi 7/1.7mm, or 50m of 10mm2 building wire 7/1.3mm that's been sitting around for a few decades. So at least 250m-300m of single strand, I should be fine for materials :D

We used round rod on the Ruschbahn to represent a lighter kind of overhead with wire x supports. Problem you may have is expansion and contraction with your high day and colder nights. We made the pan sire so that it coukd move for the same reasons but I never won the argument about having weights at one end to allow for the variations. But on the whole it worked ok.
I am not sure yet how I will tension it, springs seem easier , but weights are prototypical . I definitely will have to allow for expansion and contraction, plus the occasional knock. I guess it will be all part of the fun, to me it would not be a Swiss railway without it.

Stewie, I think that your chosen method will be just the thing.
When the CFR had catenary I used LGB throughout. I even ran power to it so that the locomotives with pantographs ran off the power.
I did have problems with wildlife getting entangled in the wires and the non metal posts on the rack line became brittle and broke after a few years.

See, you knee it would come in useful some day

Hi all, its been awhile since I last posted here.
I am sure you all know how life sometimes likes to throw a spanner or two into the works.
So not a lot of forward progress has been made, but I have been able to run a train a lot which has been very nice.
As a part of that playing I have found a few areas where improvements can be made.

I have added a couple of big rocks above the pond filter here, yet to be mortared in.
A minor straightening of the trackbed to be done here. I have moved the rocks back on the left to give more room for the concrete works and the points for the siding to be connected in a new spot to give a more appropriate siding length.

Langwies station just fitted in here , but I wasn't happy with how crowded in it was and I wanted more room to model the houses and add trees as a backdrop to the station. So this part is getting a tear down and extension, hopefully starting in spring.
We have done a good bit of yard work over the last few months and Doggo now has access to a 1/3 more of the backyard.
Haha, so expect to see him in even more photos now.

The plants and moss have grown very well in this part over winter. The temporary pond filter return will be in place till summer time and yes it is corrugated conduit .
Even thou i haven't done a lot of work I have managed a few eBay purchases. I can now move some passengers and oil.

I had been saving for a second hand Allegra, but spanner no1 and a rethink of things and that plan has changed. So I have used the money I was saving, to buy the above coach and tanker. Plus 3 more coaches and a sliding wall wagon which are yet to turn up.
Fans of the RhB might wonder why I bought old Bernina line coaches for the Arosa line?
There are 2 very good reasons, 1, I like the livery better and 2, they come up on eBay second hand a third cheaper than more appropriate coaches quite often.
Which has allowed me to assemble a decent length passenger train and splurge on my very first brand new piece on its way from Grootspoor's.
That's my train budget well and truly blown for the foreseeable future.

Once again Arosa station has become a dumping ground.

I have shuffled around the rocks leading into Arosa station, a work still in progress. The moss has grown well here too.
If things go to plan there should be more progress to show over the next few months.

Good to see things progressing well, sometimes one step forwards two steps back can be a bit distressing but the long term route will always in the end be forwards. Great to see your good friend Doggo as always.

Looking good, Doggo, oh! and the railway, too.

In the last photo, is the apparent dip and twist of the track bottom right just camera angle or real?
I think it must be the camera angle, its very close to level. There is a slight dip off the concrete onto the metal work. Nothing has derailed or uncoupled there in many trips around in either direction.

Yeah 1 step forward 2 back isn't the fastest way forward, but that's ok sometimes it takes a few goes to work out what you want and the best way to do it. Better to do it now before any scenic work has been done and the changes will make for a nicer railway in the end. Especially at Langwies station, a lot of previous work to be wasted there but at least nearly all the materials are salvageable. As a bonus I get to have the track take a sharp 90 deg bend onto Lanwies viaduct. Thou like all things on the Arosaish bahn it will be backwards a left instead of a right turn.
Maybe I should of called it the Asora bahn.:)
