Can you use an airplane motor with an rc car esc?
I've got a TomCat G30CC Motor TomCat G30CC 6432-200KV Outrunner Motor for 30CC Gas Plane and I want to make the Railways with it. As I understand, the main difference between brushless airplane motors and brushless Railways motors is that they're more open to the elements. But if that's not an issue, and the current and cell counts match up, then it should work right?
I'm specifically looking at getting a TomCat Brushless SMART ESC to run it.

Theoretically, it should work. But it seems far more powerful than you are likely to need. Also, you will need to find space for the up to ten li-ion cells it requires and find quite a hefty gearbox to tame it for use in a model loco. You might find it is a lot more trouble than it's worth.

The other issue with ESCs for planes is that they are designed for permanent control - hands on all the time and the Tx is live and using batteries all the time. Many railway ESCs have a cruise control system, developed from the ability to make and break the signal if an obstacle got in the way (tunnel, tree or length of run etc) which allows you to switch the Tx off while the train trundles on its journey, then switch it on again when you need to regain control.

NO!

What are you putting it in?
That motor is powerful enough for a small ride-on.
It is also designed to run a lot faster than the small can motors we normally use. - We use small (relatively) low-speed motors with 30:1 gearboxes.
You would need 10x that reduction with a motor of that speed.

If you want to go with 'conventional' RC components, then a cheap Chinese rock crawler, would be a better donor.
