Adblock Plus/no Script

I've just added two Firefox add-ons - Adblock Plus and No Script - and it's made a vast improvement to the speed of the site - the CPU usage has dropped right down - and as an added bonus, all the sub forums are now listed in a single column instead of being spread out over the page. I'm not sure if that's down to the add-on but it's a big improvement anyway.

There's just three little things I would like to resolve .......

- The software won't let me "ask a question" when I click on that item in the title bar - it just directs me to 'search' - is this a No-Script issue?

- The only unwanted ad. that won't go away is the 'Massoth/Garden Rail Outlet' ad. on the rhs of the page - is this one immune from ad-block?

- Several of the little icons around the site - like the 'envelope' at the top right of the page to open conversations - and the one to the left of the site title, now just appear as boxes with four alfa-numeric symbols. I see that No-Scipt has blocked several objects on the site, but I can't see if any of those are affecting the icons?

ScriptSafe with Google works in a similar way.

Ask question, search, entered "decoders", with ScriptSafe ON, no results appeared.

Icons you mention are unaffected by ScriptSafe, might be a Firefox issue.

Columns are in the same format as you describe, using ScriptSafe.

Thanks for the replies guys. There's currently 10 members and 49 guests online - if it was only the guests had to take the ads - then surely that would encourage them to register. I know I've registered on several sites just to avoid the ads.

And once registered, I would have thought they would be far more likely to return. Some statistical analysis must have been done on this - it would be interesting to know what the result was. Presumably the site revenue is driven by - guest hits? - member hits? - or both combined?

As far as the value of the advertising is concerned - I would have thought it was far more effective when targeted at the visitors to the site - once you've seen it a few times it's value decreases and when - as a member - you see it every time you log on - I know in my case it's value has declined to virtually zero and maybe even an annoyance for some people - hence the proliferation of ad blockers.

I personally never really saw the need for a blocker untill yesterday when I was finaly overwhelmed by some of the advertising on predominately American sites, and the old technique of simply registering on a site to avoid the ads seems increasingly not to work anymore.

I view the site on an iPad using Safari. The only ads I see are the Massoth/ Garden Rail Outlet ad, and occasionally one below that. Both are easy to ignore. Nothing pops up in the middle of the page like on some sites. When that happens I either click on them to close, or stop using the site. There are no free lunches and unless we all want to subscribe by paying, then allow the site owner to cover some costs by accepting advertising.

Well I certainly agree with you that there are no free lunches, but surely advertisers must realise there's a law of diminishing retuns at work here. The biggest impact an ad has in this industry - as opposed to selling continuous consumption items like bread or washing powder - is usually the first few times a consumer sees it - after that he's either going to make the purchase (or whatever) - decide it's not for him and ignore it - or put it on his list of suppliers like I've done with the Garden Rail Outlet. It's certainly not going to increase their sales by just sitting there as the biggest feature on my screen.

Like you say, it's pretty easy to ignore, but I just don't see the upside of continually showing it to members AFTER they've registered. As I said previously - the removal of advertising after registration is a pretty good incentive to join the forum - and who knows? - that may well prove to be of a nett benefit to the site owner, especialy as there are around three times a many guests on line as there are members at any one time.(right now there's 14 members and 53 guests) Only an analysis of the numbers would show for sure.

There are hardly any adverts on this site which is a blessing and I thank the owners.
The US equivalent of this site is swamped with ads and drives me mad to a point I won't use it.
If you have adblocker plus you can exempt gscalecentral.net easily by clicking on the adblocker plus (red ABP) icon on the toolbar.
 
Thanks Dave - I'll try that. Yes, it was a US site that prompted me to ge a blocker. It's a really excellent site, especially for live steam, but there was this spooky little girl - like the one in the 'Exorcist' - grinning at me every time I logged on. Don't get me wrong, the ad was for a really worthwhile charity, but that grin got to me in the end. I don't know what the ad agency was thinking when they chose that image.

It used to be bottom left on I.E. whatever. Now not there at all???

I buy from GRO quite frequently.. If I click the ad to go to Marks' site, does he end up paying for the 'referral'?
Or,
Has he paid a 'fee' for the add to be there?

Is it only the 'rolling' adds at the top, and in the sidebar, that you get income from? - In terms of this adblock debate.

Do they pay just to be on the site? - Or is it only if 'we' click-through on them?

I didn't know how to do it - so thanks for that!

At one stage there were 43 robots on line early this morning. That number worries me quite a lot - having once been hacked for my bank details! I have disabled (on Firefox - my main browser) the adblocker - I just hope it doesn't let anything unwelcome in!

'Tis a pity the ads aren't g scale orientated!

Mick, you don't have to disable ABP completely, only on those sites such a GSC that you are happy with.
 
I hardly think anyone would discuss the merits or income of adverts.
