Has anyone had any experience building the pdf models quarry Hunslet locomotive kit, or the one from garden railway specialists that comes as a separate body and chassis kit. Fancy building one but wanted to know if anyone had any information for me before I bite the bullet.
Thanks Adam

I've built a PDF kit. Although they are very well made, I had trouble with the gears. They stripped within minutes of use. To be fair, these were very promptly replaced with upgraded gears, and I've had no trouble since. The superstructure is clear plastic and needs to be welded with solvent as opposed to sticking. The 3D printed parts are very well produced and minimal cleaning up/filling required. The chassis are bolted together, so easy to get square. Yo do need to add a fair amount of weight underneath though as they are very light, even with the 2 AA batteries. All in all, worth a punt, as long as you remember that it is a cheap kit, rather than a highly detailed top of the range job. 20210426_180437_004.jpg

Does it have to be a Hunslet?

Have a look at Boot Lane Works offerings.
Their chassis arrangement is quite innovative, and seems to run well.
Similar materials, and construction.

A satisfied customer.

Thanks for the insight Paul I did think it would need to weight in it especially as I was thinking of making it radio controlled. I would definitely prefer a Hunslet as I love going to Wales and all the other places seeing them in action, I saw these two kits and thought even someone with my limited modelling skills could manage.

I've built one of the GRS Hunslet kits. The chassis is metal similar to the Essel engineering ones, the body kit is basic, resin castings bits of plastic sheet and whitemetal castings. I managed to fit full radio control, batteries and sound in but its hardly G scale, its big for 16mm and the 3ft gauge hunslets were inside frame designs whereas the kit chassis is like the 32mm version outside framed. Its looks fine to me though._5111197.jpg_5111164.jpg

Well, you're not actually born with modelling skills, so practice makes perfect. It is fairly straightforward, you just need to take your time with the rubbing down, and getting the quartering right, but easy enough. And, of course, in the expensive world of our hobby, reasonably cheap, so a good start for practicing
