Very nice job, but if it were me I would make the planks wider. The narrow planking as per the original retains the look of a standard gauge car. IMO only.

I can certainly see that...And if I had it to do all over again I may have gone with wider. But once the glue set I was committed (or should be)!

I quite agree, done similar many a time. No way it detracts from a very tidy bit of work. Like the caboose too.

It is unusual Steve but as I was doing my "research" I came across a couple of examples, links below.

I built these for my "imaginary" railroad, the L&I (Named after my kids, hence the name 'Leahville & Iansburg)...As the line is run by a bunch of clowns they are infamous for not always following industry standards.

The first link's not working but the last one was one of the Hawaii boxcars I was thinking of, I like the corrugated steel roof it has too has a change to the usual zinc sheets.

The E.B.T. boxcar looks like a nice easy model to make being steel sided.
