Hi Jon,

It was chilly. During the week there are 2 scheduled departures from Zittau. We took the afternoon one and bought a day ticket. The journey took us to Bertsdorf and then to Oybin and back to Bertsdorf, then Bertsdorf to Jonsdorf with a return to Bertsdorf. This was followed by a second trip to Oybin then a run back from there to Zittau. The restaurant car was open but they also served drinks and hot food throughout the train. All in all a great afternoon. I hope that you found the train with the rollwagens interesting.

There is something about European railways that make a good photo. Particularly the smaller and narrow gauge lines. Everything seems in order. The railway's presence doesn't spill over into the surrounding landscape as ours seem to do over here. I've seen a multitude of pictures posted here and in doing on line searches, of Euro trains. It all seems so groomed, right up next to the tracks.

Great photos, I'm most envious of your trip.
I am particularly pleased that you have given a better view of the vehicles which have been dumped in that siding at Bertsdorf for as long as I have been watching the webcam!

I don't know if you are making a joke here, but these are not test beds for rolling stock. The are called, in German, 'Rollwagen', and are used, as you see in your own photo, to transport standard gauge rail cars over narrow gauge tracks. Rollwagen (Transport) – Wikipedia. Here in UK a similar car was used by the Leek & Manifold Railway in Stafforshire for the same purpose.

Martin, any chance of uploading some larger version of the pics (maybe putting them in the Meeja - sorry, Media - section?).
Many of them would be great to be able to study in more detail than the small pics allow....

Add me to the list! We used to see a lot of these little trains when we were about our business 'bird-watching' in the DDR. The fireman used to wave at us in a friendly manner, and the engineer was instantly on the radio reporting that he'd seen us.....happy days, eh? A very popular stretch for us was the Harzquerbahn/Wernigerode sub, and many a day was spent 'bird-watching' in that area, in spite of the continual interruptions from those noisy Russians and their smelly tanks and stuff.
