Re:Yet to be named railway

The first bridge(s) is in position.

Old flagstones have been positioned ready for cementing to show the height that the planting area will be.

I was going to have an overhang at the rear but I think the planter is high enough leaving the rear track running through a dark cutting.

The front track is going downhill from the point it leaves the junction and here is approx 2 inches difference in height from the track at the rear.

An overview of the area. More flagstones will be positioned vertically to complete the planter.

Work intervenes again so no chance of any more progress until next Thursday (weather permitting).

Re:Yet to be named railway

looking very good , looking forward to further progress .

Re:Yet to be named railway

So much potential looking great!! Be sure you think about the kinds of trains you may aspire to run in 5 years time and keep bends as open as possible. Looks like u are anyway! I learnt this from bitter experience.

Re:Yet to be named railway

Looking very good so far that Koi pond bridge will be awsome!!

OK so how deep is a frog pond?????.......................Knee-deep........Knee-deep...............I know hat, coat, door,...................

Re:Yet to be named railway

And how will our Ade fix the bridge?
Rivet...rivet...rivet... I'll use the same door as Minimans shall I?

Re:Yet to be named railway

Hey Adeshers! you're really getting on with your layout... like the way you are going for multi-level... I'm not sure my Big Haulers would cope with gradients in our slippery weather. Great use of space:thumbup:

Re:Yet to be named railway

that little railway looks great...and it looks like to be no more just a little railway.

Good luck u have no bridges yet (because mine were blown away by the wind today).

How about the name, does it have one now?

I saw your bridges took a hammering - a great shame :o:

Still no decision on the railways name. I might just shorten it to the Y.T.B.N.R.

I like the look of your line - reminds me of a sand painting! How on earth do you keep it clean or prevent the weeds coming through?

Re:Yet to be named railway

Ade, your bridges are ready, can you nip down and pick them up? :rolf:

Re:Yet to be named railway

At last a few days off and some better weather allows me to make a little progress.

The planter was completed and left to dry overnight.

Slabs were positioned to get an idea how the 'back' line would continue

The planter was filled with compost.

Re:Yet to be named railway

I decided that more bridges were required taking both lines from the planter to the next section - the back line will be an almost level embankment / ledge type thingy whilst the branch line to the pond will be something else (that means I've not decided yet ;) )
Following Gregh example on the Sandstone & Termite Railway I wanted to try making some stone arches from Thermalite or Celcon lightwight building blocks.

Two blocks in position to get rough dimensions

Embankment / ledge built up using leftover flagstones.

First stone arch bridge in position.

Re:Yet to be named railway

A bit more progress made (as you will probably know if you've seen my other posts regarding bridge building).

A long bridge was made to extend the top line further towards the compost bin corner where the reverse loop will be.

Nearly time for some gardening. :)

Re:Yet to be named railway

I've added a parapet and filled in that little gap at the left end of the arched Celcon block bridge

Next task to be tackled was the reverse loop around the compost bin. Here the track has been laid to ensure correct geometry.

Levels were checked and digging out was found to be required to form an embankment type thingy to join the big bridge to the revers loop.

Embankment under construction.

Garden railways are about railways and.................... oh yes - gardens, so I thought a few plants might be beneficial.

The reverse loop will be mounted on decking boards fabricated 'off site'.

Placed in position it did not seem to fit at first.

But with a few blows from a suitably sized hammer..............

Re:Yet to be named railway

Now what to do with this gap............

Track in position and gauging trials began.
22bd816d8e274322abaf3915a923777e.jpg

It's a tight squeeze round the back (oo er missus!)
2231941cf1954162b50f388a1efc0248.jpg

I'm hoping that this shot will become a false tunnel portal (the loop will be one way only so the trains will always appear coming out of the tunnel).

This was my solution to the gap problem. I intend cladding the wood with some more green plastic garden edging (or similar).
