Awaiting delivery of my 2 black unpainted 'lyn' type locos. To match other locos i have, i am wanting to apply the yellow 'ELY THOMAS LUMBER' logo onto the sides of the locos. How should i go about this. I have never altered a loco, out of the box, and i would also like to add some light weathering, which i have also never done. Any advice or ideas greatly received.

As for yellow transfers try www.precisionlabels.co.uk
John will take on small commissions, and he can print in any colour. If you email him a picture of what you'd like him to match and the dimensions you want the finished transfer he can do the rest.

No connection other than a satisfied customer, several times in the last two years.

i think il contact them about some transfers.
i also have some box cars, and hoppers, that i would like to respray into brown, or red oxcide. how should i go about this, i have never done a repaint job. a step by step guide for idiots would be good that takes me from start to finish.
taaaa.

Cheers Mr Hilton, iv contacted http://www.precisionlabels.co.uk/
and they are going to do me some 'YELLOW PINE LUMBER CO.' transfers to put on my new locos, they will then all be he same company. Took a bit to exactly work out what i wanted, due to my lack of info and photos, but so far so good, i will post pictures when i receive them. Thanks for the recomendation.

Hi Paul

I weather a lot of my cars and have used a coat of spray can Plasticote red oxide (other matt oxide spray are available!) as a base. It is nice and matt and very near to box car brown (especially that used by Rio Grande). If you use another colour that is not matt, when you have finished I recommend Testors Dulcote matt varnish spray. I have used every matt spray varnish going and the best for matt is Testors by a mile.

Fitsy take off the bogies, take out the wheel sets and then spray (light coats so no dripping) each side in turn. Even the underneath.
Also spray the bogies but first cover the journal holes and the bolster top where it will be swivelling under the body.
You can leave a few minutes between each coat pass as the paint dries quickly.
When you are satisfied that the car and bogies are coated well and look good you can go on to decal applying and weathering if you wish.
If you have used a non matt paint sheen etc, then use the maat varnish, again do not saturate heavily as it will run and spoil the effect .

Oh and yes , paint the outsode and inside of the wheels. These can be done as box car red but if you want to weather them then a dark dusty rust brown is better.

I wanted to keep the box car below as if it had just come out of the car shop
Here are some shots of a wood 1:20.3 kit that I made and painted using the above method
