Wire end protectors

Any recommendations for wire end protectors? I presume that I plug these straight into the sockets rather than the wires ?

I think you might mean crimp terminals?

Your local motor factor store might have something suitable....

LGB sell the orange ones that match screw sockets on points, switch boxes etc. If you search the electrical distributors (TLC, RS etc) you will find them a LOT cheaper and also in different sizes if required. Technical term is "cord ends" IIRC.
