Why am I so drawn to LGB?

The grey DR one with rivets. It is different to the Newqida LGB copies which are RhB but I have yet to see a RhB prototype the same.
I was thinking of not putting the top railings back on the 12 Newqida ones I'm refinishing. I think they look better that way. A bit more old style.
Considering you only need one, I think you made a good choice being better quality.

I say 'surviving', but I don't want you to get the idea that it wore out - it didn't. Our much-missed pal, Steve Warrington, sold upwards of £5000-worth of my LGB stuff a while back to fund my growing Gauge 1 interest.

So you have got the LGB shorty Tank Wagon formerly of the Toy Train range. LGB have beefed up the lettering on these, made that somewhat more accurate to represent one of the Harz or other East German NG Wagons. Ok and bumped up the price somewhat as well! Originally when introduced these were less than £15 at varying dealers (back in the late 90's dont all weep at once now) but these days new they are upwards of £40 I believe. Originally they were available in all sorts of well known Oil Company Liveries as well.

Nothing wrong with them, they are a little shorter than the standard range of Wagons which makes them ideal for a smaller railway. Search out the Opens, Flats and Vans all can be found at sensible prices. Plus there were also some 4w Coaches to match.

This is what I did with my one. Note the high walkway and Ladder for operators to load/unload through the Top. Also side plates as seen on many Continental Tank Wagons. Plus of course weathering and a new number to match my desire for all wagons to be uniquely identified.

That looks good dunnyrail. I have just spent an hour or so trying to work out how to do the ladders and hand rails on my el cheapo Newqida tanks. I want to do something a bit different to how they come. The running boards are often down the sides a bit which makes sense then the hand rails are not so up in the air. I saw some like you have done on your ToyTrain tank with the ladder at the end. They had a single hand rail on the outside but your's looks good as it is being a small tank.
I like the ToyTrain stuff especially the vans. I just repainted a set of 3 bright yellow and blue ones from LG&B porter saddle tank sets to a pale grey green. Much better now.

I have never found a two wheel prototype the same as the regular LGB and Newqida ones until today. I think they are based on the one below however the running boards are narrower and lower.

This is the Metre Gauge Harz one that I have used for inspiration for my Toytrain Conversion. image.jpeg
The RHB also had a selection of Metre Gauge Tank wagons as well. Perhaps these may be closer to the Newquida ones, certainly Andy Rush dew much inspiration for his conversions from that line.

Hmm, no ladders that I can see. The pic you just posted above looks somewhat similar to what my Newqida ones currently look like. I haven't put the ladders/railings back on.
I suspect the riveted ones were earlier that welded ones.

That water wagon belongs to the Wernigerode-based fire-fighting train that I saw in action back in 1983!!! It was working in concert with three trucks, putting out a large brush fire started by exhaust stack sparks, no doubt.

Will two cheapo vehicles only get half as much running time, and therefore wear, as one expensive version, and hence potentially outlast it? Purely theoretical question, obviously.
 
Isn't that a question like "would you be happier at the bottom of an A stream or at the top of a B stream"? I know where I'd have sooner been.

Eaglecliff, I wanted a string of tankers and me being in Australia, it would cost me a fortune to buy one at a time second hand in shipping expenses alone from OS. I got a shipping deal on 12 cars from a regional online discount toy shop for about AU$25 each so it was an easy choice. Probably cost me less than one quarter of what LGB ones would. So to answer your question, I still come out with twice the value if they only last half as long as LGB. I have some expensive LGB and Brawa coaches so it's good to have some long consists that won't cost me a heart attack when there is an unforeseen incident. :sweating:

It is all horses for courses I guess. At the time Andy Rush was trying to create a Fuel Block Train he used a Bachman Tank Wagon kit, 3 Newquida Tank Wagons and 2 flats converted from Newquida Bogie Open and 2 unknown sources of 4 wheel wagons. the whole ensemble looked very good after he had done his magic to it (based heavily on RHB Practice). one can imagine the cost of using genuine LGB Wagons. I inherited the Train and it makes a nice Block Train to supply Fuel to a supposed Power Plant in my Silberhutte Yard. All still runs very well with Bachmann Wheelsets and LGB Couplings.
