The Claptowte Railway

Just an update on progress. The platform walls installed on Baseboard No3. This is the far end of the platform which starts on Board No1, spans Board No2, and ends here. The small piece of timber in the centre is just an offcut, glued in to give extra support to the plasticard top.

3mm thick plasticard top cut and glued to form the platform surface.

The plasticard surface scribed and distressed to represent stone slabs.

The next stage will be to paint the top surface and when that has been done, textured, embossed brick paper will be glued to the platform walls.

Hmmm, the Hovercraft project is stalled, due to a problem with corrosion on the main battery pack lead - the copper strands are black, and I suspect it goes all the way back to the top of the pack :(

So, I've turned my attention to the reed switch on the 4-4-0 Centennial ....... the one wot I'm trying to put on the tender bogie.

Should be easy but .................. the bogie design is such that you can't double stack the magnets on the wheels, 'cos the flanges are too close to the plastic brake gear sub-frame.

So, I eventually remembered moving the sound trigger on my Buddy L from loco driver (when I put an 8-coupled Aristo brick in it) to the tender. The trigger was, I think, light sensitive, and sat in the middle of the axle.

I have found a Delrin gear, and a brass tube that just about fits the Bachmann axle and sleeves the gear, so I can mount this in the centre of the axle, and use more than one magnet >:)

Wait for some glue to dry :yawn: and I'll post a pic.

After that, sharrafter work out how to permanently fix said reed switch in the right place :think:

I've looked around all the options for the railcar radiator and none of them are quite right; and then I reminded myself that I'm quite practical, and that it would be in the spirit of the original builder's work if I made a radiator. So I had a rummage and found some close-grained sapele which should do the trick. The bandsaw and sander made light of all the necessaries. 20261102_200250.jpg
And a trial fit looked promising:

I also found a very basic steel bogie, and fitted some Accucraft IOM wheels to it; they are currently 32mm gauge, but I've machined up some tubes so that I can cut the axles and regauge them to 45mm. The carriage floor is going to be a challenge, as the roof is fixed in place. I can see some sort of ship in a bottle being required, but for now I'll just reflect on the progress I've made thus far...

It looks the business - so we assume that the Clogher Valley might also have sold a railbus to the IoM >:)

In life, it went from the Clogher Valley to the County Donegal, where it became their Nº10. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that the IOM might have bought it, although they were down on their uppers by then.
But the change of scale to 13 inches to the foot might have been more problematic -it's 1:19, not 1:20.3!

Clever stuff! I guess it's like a balloon and works with air....

Actually I'm not sure. Since I was a small boy, I've always liked to take things apart to see how they work. If and when the hopper ever acts up, I shall report my findings here.....;)
