What happened at your workbench today?

Miss Artois, The clamps please:devil:
I could put a rambling description, but a picture paints a thousand words, so....

Novel I like it. As I mentioned elsewhere have been riveting, originally started drilling micro holes for wntamalogical pins but hand got tired of that so the old backstop of Cambrian Rivets come back into play, this time the super glue not playing nicely so having to plastic glue them in place. Not finished one side yet, then the other side and ends to do. This may take some time!

I own alot of tools, but clamps of all types and sizes hold the record in my shop. They are one tool that you can never have enough of.

Progress on the Claptowte Railway.

At the beginning of the week, I completed painting the painting of the rail sides and chairs on Baseboard No4 (of 10). I decided that before I put it away to work on other boards, I should take the opportunity to mark up the intended locations of the various scenic items that would stand on that board. In addition to marking the locations, when it came to the Gernise End Signal Box and I.P.Black Coal Merchant's Office, I also screwed down some battens, from lengths of 1/4" square wood strip, that the buildings could locate over and plug into position. I will need to also do this for the scratch built Cattle Loading Dock, but as that straddles across onto Baseboard No3, I cannot mark this up and screw down battens until the two boards are linked together. Although painted, at the moment, to take the bareness off the plywood top, eventually the top surface will be gravelled and/or grass flocked, and the track ballasted.

I got an hour or so in the workshop this afternoon, and pressed on with the power bogie for the railcar. I turned up some brass bearings, and drilled the chassis sides to take them, before focusing on the chassis end plates. They need to have flat ends which are square in two planes, and be exactly the same length as each other. Having measured up, they needed to be 32mm long, so some 25x3mm plate was cut to length (i.e. slightly oversized), before both pieces were clamped in a four-jaw chuck. One end was turned, the material flipped round and the other end faced off.

The chassis sides were then unbolted (I'd fixed them together for drilling and filing) and the sides and ends were assembled, being held in place with toolmakers' clamps.

Wheels and axles were fitted, and the side rods offered up. They appeared too tight, but then everything suddenly lined up!

The next stage will be to spot through the chassis sides before drilling and tapping the end plates; at 6BA (tapping drill: 1.8mm) this could be a ticklish operation...

I had a couple more workshop hours this evening, in which I drilled and tapped eight 8BA holes and only broke one drill bit . Fortunately, the broken part was removed without a fuss.
The wheel back to back is 40mm, but the distance across the bearing faces was a little more, so they were reduced slightly; and then I fiddled with the permutations of wheels, wheel positions and coupling rods to find an arrangement which worked. You can't see it in this picture
20261022_211443.jpgbut I now have a rolling chassis which can be pushed along with one finger...
The crosshead screws will be replaced by hex-headed set screws in due course.
