Greetings from a new member of G Scale Central!

I’d like to buy an LGB steam loco w/ Pulsed Smoke generator. Preferably a Santa Fe 2-8-2 Mikado, Sumpter Valley 2-6-6-2 or similar.

Anyone know where I might find one? I’m in Southern CA. Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure if LGB ever released a the Mikados or SVRs with Pulse smoke.
Unless you buy one 2nd Hand where someone customized installed it.

The only LGB Ready-To-Run American locomotives (that I've seen) so far to have Pulse smoke, are the Moguls and the Limited Edition Golden Spike 4-4-0s.

Welcome Michael.

If you want pulsed smoke with DCC you will need to buy a used example where the pulsing has been aftermarket fitted.

Hello Michael,

Welcome to the Forum..
As has been said, it will (most likely) have to be a pre-owned model..

There will be things available, from the UK, but shipping and insurance, will make it an expensive purchase.

I am sure you will be able to find something closer to home?
Perhaps a 'wanted' request, on the My Large Scale Forum, would get you some leads?

Good luck!
PhilP.

Michael, i too love pulsed smoke, and have purchased a couple of the marklin lgb factory fitted pulsed locos.
but, i run analog…and without digital control, the pulsed smoke wont work. Yes, its different than the older lgb locos.

afaik, the pulsed smoke doesnt stay in the on mode without digital command. Further due to power use, pulsed smoke arrives in the off mode in factory locos.
as im a digital moron, i may be corrected by others, but the above has been my experience.

I'm sure that Massoth have done an analogue DC version of their pulsed smoke unit for some time now, for which the loco has to be equipped with a hall-effect chuff sensor (the DCC pulsed units can either be operated from the chuff sensor or directly from the decoder signal).

There are two reasons for pulsed-smoke tending not to be available under DC:
1. A perception of the Suppliers, that Users with analogue layouts may-well have less-capable power supplies..
So, as lowest-common-denominator, it is turned off.
2. Marklin, seem to have made a decision (with their MFX decoders) to make activation of pulsed-smoke (on analogue power) difficult, if not impossible, to enable.

So, to the best of my knowledge, new Marklin/MFX equipped loco's, will not allow this.
Massoth equipped loco's will. - But this depends on the revision of the decoder and pulsed-smoke unit.

Well, not having a constant input power source (DCC) would make it so the pulsed unit would have to have a battery backup to run at slow speeds, and these things use power, so for analog track power, not workable.

Jerry Yeramian in Mass. makes gears and also installs ESU decoders and pulsed smoke units. I don't know if he does the installs for other people. He posts on Facebook in the g-scale groups.
