Video Uploading

You will have seen from some of my video posts that they have taken considerable time to upload to youtube!( 4hrs + for a 3 and a half minute long video in medium definition!)

I am therefore seeking advice on uploading to youtube OR any other site which will accept videos quicker.
( I assume that because of the long upload time that this is the reason why the sound and picture were no longer synchronised...the original was and is fully in synchronisation!)

Ay helpful suggetions would be very welcome!

This might not seem helpful, but the likely cause of slow uploading is your internet connection.
Most connections are much faster at downloading than at uploading.
If you have ADSL, the "A" stands for "asymmetric", referring to the down- and upload speed difference.

There are free web-based speed checking sites that will test your connection.
Using http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ < Link To MyBroadbandSpeed I got 1225Kbps (Kilobytes per second) down, and only 539 Kbps up.
Then, using http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ < Link To BroadbandSpeedChecker I got 1192 and 527.

Not very fast, but we are fairly rural.
A big video onto YouTube can take over an hour for me.

These speedtesters are 'interesting' but flaky.
The first one above gives me a d/l speed of 5544kbps and the second a speed of 3320kbps.
The first one is interesting because according to BT the max available in my location is under 3000kbps that is 300kbps less than it was 12 months ago presumably because more people are logged on now.

According to the 2nd speed checker, I get only 372Kps up load. Is there a'best' time to upload?

I've had best results uploading between 20.00 and 22.00 on weekdays. It could be caused by local traffic (so it might not work for you) but I can upload a 3 min vid in about 45 mins.

I don't even try between 08.00 and 18.00 - I know it's going to be bad then.

4hours seems very long.

How big was it in megabytes ???

Don't forget you are uploading Megabytes with kilobits.
Find your upload speed and divide it by 8 and that will give you your upload speed in kilobytes.
Divide the file size by the kilobytes and you will get your rough time to complete.

Its all in the bits and bytes.

For instance...
If your upload speed is 86kiloBytes/sec, typical for an 8Megabit connection......
Then a 40Megabyte file would take approx 8minutes to upload.
Snag is Youtube most likely cannot take you upload at that speed and it will slow some.

I uploaded a video of 73Mbytes in about 15mins Saturday, I normally get around 6Mbit connection here.
