Using Roco Z21 with ESU mobil control II

[size=12pt]Has anyone tried this combination? If so did you have to load new apps to do it? As much as I can read in theory it should work,however "SHOULD" is such an illusive term.[/size] ;)
 
I'm not a Z21 user or use ESU control but as I understand it the ESU mobil control II is an Android device with added rotary control.

ESU supply (or will supply, I'm not sure it is available yet) an app that will talk to their command station to run on it. Since it is an Android device you could download any Android app to it and run it. You could download the Z21 Android app and that should enable you to talk with the Z21 command station.

HOWEVER since the rotary control is not something that is standard on Android I suspect that you would NOT be able to use the rotary control with the Z21 app. To use the rotary control you would need an app that was specially written to use it, as far as I know there is no such app available. I would be glad to be proved wrong if anyone has any other information about this.

The Z21 and the ESU mobile controller OR the more recent Piko smart controller ( made by ESU ) work just fine with the Roco Z21 . I am using the Piko product connected to the sniff bus of the Z21 and am happy to say that the huge motorized Aluminium knob is functioning flawlessly plus having all DCC functions available not to mention a very good library of color images for a wide range of locomotives to use . At the moment this setup is connected to an HO layout ,but soon with the addition of a Roco 10789 CDE adapter and Uhlenbrock's 63280 power 8 booster fed by Uhlenbrock 20155 transformer is going to control a roof top garden layout with LGB tracks and mostly Piko rolling stock . The combination of Z21 and Piko (ESU) controller provides a varied array of throttles by using both Apple iOS and Android with the ability to add a Loco net controller by Uhlenbrock such as the Daisy radio hand held .

Yes indeed . But I feel that it is not fare to compare the 2 devices the ESU ( Piko ) unit is a full android device which means it can function as a smart phone / tablet with android apps and once you use the touch screen you never go back to an LCD screen . However, the best feature for me is the motorized rotary knob . Just leave ( forget) the knob on the multimaus on any position other than dead center and call up the address on another locomotive you see it shoot off and sometimes crash into another train or get derailed .. but with the smart controller the built in motor will take over and turn the knob back to the full stop position . I could probably go on with more points that prove the superiority of the android device as I do have a multimaus as well . At the end I guess it all comes down to how deep ones pocket is : )
