Union Pacific #844 Locomotive BUild

Back after a break and your project has progressed a pace Jerry. Some stonking work, it looks stunning.

Getting towards the end of my 844 project. I seem to keep finding details to add, having fun with that. Getting anal in my old age I guess!

Looks Fantastic Jerry very nice

I got the lettering on, most of it is ink jet vinyl paper, cut it out and stick it on. I had to work on the valve gear some, with the different wheels/rods I had to modify the Pacific gear to work properly. A little weathering and it will be all done. Been a fun project.

Wow, that looks superb, i am again amazed at the skill's you guys have and the thought process that leads to the finished results.

How does it run

A fantastic piece of modelling, Jerry.

Could you explain how you did the 'humpty-back' boiler please. I've wanted to model one but couldn't figure out how.

Also, maybe in a separate Topic, could you tell us about how you use the metal foil (not the printers metal). How do you emboss it and then shape it over say a dome?

Thanks guys. I am using the centipede tender I made for my Challenger a couple of years ago. I did rebuild it last year, as it had some problems. Now tinkering with it to hook it up to 844. Humpback boiler is 2 or 3 Pacific boiler tops spliced together. See page one, there they are covered with some thin plastic. You make it like a ships hull, make some bulkheads and glue over those.
I'll attach a detail shot of the dome that I used the thin metal duct tape on. You emboss it first, from the back for bolt heads, or lines that stick up. From the front for lines that go down. Then peel off the backing. This dome was flat on top, so I pressed down the embossed foil on top, made some cuts on the end(I had practiced with a scrap piece first). My idea was the cuts were metal welds.

That metal foil sure looks useful. I'll have to see if I can find some around here. Does it 'dent' if you have it glued over something solid and then bump it?

I got the foil duct tape at my local hardware store. Has a backing you peel off it. If you put it over a solid surface, it won't dent, well if you ran your fingernail over it, pressing down, you would make a line, but you are careful with your models, aren't you?

Well, have you seen this topic....... ? http://www.gscalecentral.net/m130582

Thanks Jerry.

Wow Greg, that was an awful wreck, hope it was all repairable. That would make marks in the foil, but add 'character'. :)
