I have completed track laying for the new layout - track is laid on decking boards covered in roofing felt set on gravel. At intervals I used wooden stakes in the ground to fix the decking.

Probably not the most elegant solution, or one for the long term but relatively quick and cheap and I figured that if I ( and my grandchildren!) get really keen I can relay using a more permanent solution.

As you can see the garden is no flatland and there are a few climbs for the engines - most times they coped but I had to adjust some of the levels in testing and all seem ok now.

next steps are buildings, scenery etc but my grandchildren will be helping with those!

I would imagine you will get a good few years out of the deck boards especially if covered with roofing felt, and if supported well should not warp either.
