Today on the WGLR

The new brake van looks good Mel, it will be interesting to see the other stock too:thumbup:

nicely done melll:thumbup:

Cheers guys.

Another one rolled out today. The reason why this Midland Railway based horse box has been passed for service so quickly was that it came all finished and ready to go - so I can't take any credit for this one, it's really all down to Fred's modelling skills. All I've done is to touch up the paint here and there and fit lamp irons (it will often be found attached to the rear of passenger trains).

It's a great runner as it's pretty heavy with lovely all metal running gear. Now, the WGLR has a bit of an embarrassment of riches when it comes to horse boxes at the moment (more news on this in the coming days) and is really starting to have more resemblance to Newmarket than the Welsh borders. So this vehicle will not be used for horses, but will see service as a milk van for carrying churns in the early morning milk / newspapers train. I don't know if any horse boxes were aver converted for this use in reality, but they would be ideal with a nice big ramp for loading the full churns and they were well ventilated, but at the same time, nicely insulated.

I will do some more jobs on this in the future such as fitting vacuum brake gear to match passenger train standards and replacing the MR lettering with "NEWTOWN DAIRIES MILK VAN".

Perhaps you need an Olympic dressage event diorama nearby!

What a beautiful day it's been today. Perfect weather for train running.

........... attached to the rear of which is the new milk van. As you can see, it's profile matches the existing WGLR stock quite nicely. Diesel tram loco Nellie is shunting the GIT sidings.

Later, No.1's train is seen crossing Foggy Bottom before entering the Narrows...............

Thanks again guys.

At yesterday's most excellent running session in Ruritania, I picked up another Cliff Barker RC set (my 5th) that I had purchased from Peter via the forum. The intention was for this to be used primarily for the new tramway. This would allow the GIT to operate independently of the WGLR, all be it that they share running rights over certain stretches of track.

The chosen battery carrying wagon is based on a Hartland gondola. A thin ply wood lid was made to fit onto the gondola body (who the heck chose to mould it in bright orange??!! - don't worry, it'll be covered up). The receiver/speed controller is bolted to this lid together with the on/off switch, power on LED and charging socket.

Lifting the lid reveals the wiring loom and the 10 AA battery pack which fits perfectly as you can see.

And to cover up that awful orange body (TOWIE girls take note), a purpose built van body.

If I fancy ringing the changes, or use the wagon on a non tramway train, a grey van will make a nice change.

This now means that GIT trains no longer have to run with a WGLR van (as in previous pics), but can be made up completely with it's own stock.

Of course, this all needed testing. Results = ding dang do.:thumbup:

Excellent work Mel.

Is it now a smug GIT?

Exits stage left, rapidly.

A smug OLD GIT Neil. :rolf::rolf:

Hopefully, the new role for this vehicle should now be evident?

OK, confession time. I couldn't do Newtown Dairies as the Woodlands Scenics rub-down lettering sheet I had to hand didn't have enough W's. No probs, I thought, I'll go for Shrewsbury & Welshpool Dairies, but shorten it to S & W - genius!! ......................................... until I came to do the second side and found out I didn't have enough S's. So I've got to buy another sheet anyway. :wits:
See, I really do live up to my avatar description.:confused:

Still, at least I didn't do it as S & W Diaries? :rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

Next ex Fred rolling stock to enter service (although it looks as if it could do with a trip back into the works?) is the horse box that I actually asked him for (everything up to now was a bonus!). It's based on a very early GWR design, the thing that makes it unusual being the small platform on one end for carrying food and bedding etc. for the horses. I remembered Fred sending me a photo of the prototype and I made the sacks to go onto the finished model.

The detailing in the framing, doors and louvres are a credit to Fred's modelling skills. The horse box body is fitted onto an Accucraft W&LLR flat wagon. Fred had weathered it and I've ....... errrrr .......... made it worse. The original GWR lettering is still (just about) visible.
This horse box is smaller than the WGLR's normal stock, but could be used for the occasional Welsh Cob, pony or even calfs.

As it's Tuesday, it's market day in Gooey. No.4 is in service with the livestock wagons (she looks so much better in black when on a goods turn). Here we see the train crossing Foggy Bottom.

Our attention then turns to Market Sidings where No.4 is busy shuffling her train whilst the local farming community contemplate an rare event - the opening of their wallets.

Meantime, on the ex Fred wagon front, there are another two to come. Stay tuned. ;)
