Today on the WGLR

Fantastic stuff Mel, and really inspirational as I move into the final throes of re-modelling the W&LLR!

Happiness is always Wetton Gooey.
Great pics.

Thanks guys.

Tonight it looks like the lads down at the fire station have had a shout?

The results of the LED strip purchase that I made last week following Peter's experiments. The light (using a 9v battery) isn't actually as bright as it appears here, just about right for me. I'll be fitting the other 3 strips over the next few days.

Nice! can I add my thanks to the strip suggestion - they work a treat with a 9 volt battery. Not sure whether to run three coaches off one battery and make some plug and sockets from brass tube or light each one individually. The fun of something new and a day off tomorrow. Thanks again Peter - ace find at £10 for 5m.

Fantastic pic's of No 5 Mel
That loco would look nice with my logging train

Like I've said before Rich, it's perfect for your logging line. I'm sure Steve will do you a good deal too.:thumbup::bigsmile::bigsmile:
Can't afford to buy one at the moment Mel as i have a small matter of paying back the misses for the Live steam K-27 could take some time .

Great photos. Your buildings reflect the proverbial English din. Although during our short visit last fall we had nothing but bright sunshine days.
Seriously, I really like your structures and the way they fit in with your railway.

You may remember that I made an IP coach kit about 18 months ago? This was meant to represent the WGLR's coach No.1 and would form part of the line's heritage train. The actual kit was excellent and I was really pleased with the way it turned out, but I have always struggled to get reliable running from the wheels supplied by IP on my railway - they'll do maybe 4 laps with no problems, but you can bet that on the 5th they'll de-rail. I thought this coach might be OK as it has the new IP wooden bogies, but I still had the same issues. I would have liked to fit replacement Bachmann wheels, but couldn't find a way of making them fit the IP bogies. To be fair, I also had reservations whether the bogies were fouling the side frames of the coach too when fitted as per IP's instructions. So the coach tended to become a static model sitting in Gooey station.

Yesterday afternoon I was at a bit of a loose end and decided to see if I could get No.1 to run reliably. A rummage in the spares box revealed a Bachmann bogie flat car that I bought off Steve (bigjack) some time ago. I removed the bogies and tried them on No.1, but it was obvious that the coach would have to be raised above the new bogies to allow them to swivel properly. However, I could off-set this extra height by fitting a set of the smaller Bachmann metal wheels that I had in the workshop. I cut a spacer from a suitably thick piece of ply wood and, after a bit more fettling, things seemed to be working out. This photo shows the new bogies and wheels with the ply spacer attached to the mounting point.

The next problem was that the loop coupling on one end was now way to high. The solution was to use another piece of ply to drop it to the right height. Not very elegant, but it works and will be less noticeable when painted.

This morning I gave the coach a quick run behind loco No.4. I only managed about 1/2 an hour before I couldn't feel my hands. Despite the challenging conditions, coach No.1 ran faultlessly around the worse that I could throw at it including reverse R1's, R1 pointwork etc.

I'm well chuffed now. The rear chopper coupling looks a bit odd as it is obviously too high, but re-positioning it will be the devil of a job that I may put off for a while. I'll also need to get some more decals for the doors as I used up my last ones on one side only during it's static display days. Expect to see more pics of No.1 running with the heritage train when the weather gets better.

Incidentally, loco No.4 is fitted with it's own LiPo battery. In the last few weeks it has run for about 3 hours at a friend's open day, about 2 hours on the West Mids GSS layout and probably 5 hours on the WGLR and yet, according to the charger, it still does not require recharging.

Must have either regenerative braking, or a solar panel on the cab roof!

Joking apart though, that's quite impressive....

Another coach has re-entered service as part of the WGLR heritage train. The Andel ex GVT all first had an issue with it's roof which had warped, so I've made a new one. I'd also made a bit of a botch job with it's couplings, so that was put right too. Now running a treat.

Loco No. 4 is still going too. She copes really easy with the heritage train, but 10 axles is about the limit for the original 4 coupled WGLR locos.

Real cute, lovely little pic that, Mel.

No 5 (Lyn) looks really good in her 'widow's weeds'

And that bogie coach was for too good to be parked up - nice result :bigsmile:

It does look a great little coach - nice job!
