Today on the WGLR

The train picks up speed as it crosses Foggy Bottom viaduct.

Out in the country, the locals are still too dozy to take much notice.

Finally, arriving in Wetton where the local farmers have already dropped off their full churns and taken away the empties ready for tomorrow - this is a 7 days a week operation.

Full of atmosphere, I love these 'photo story' type posts where the photos have a purpose.

I agree, the atmosphere is wonderful. Everything from the charming details around the line to the weathering on the characterful stock adds up to some really fantastic photos of what is clearly the 0530 mixed goods and passenger special!
Lovely.

Really nice, you've created a lovely line.
Can I ask what ballast youve used, Im searching everywhere for the stuff?
Thanks for the kind comments guys .

Richie - I'll leave the actual running of this train to the staff - especially during the Winter .

Cyclone - I've got a mate just up the road from me who deals in landscape materials etc. and he gets it for me. He's a bit of a rogue - he ran quite low of the stuff last Winter as the council asked him to supply them with grit salt for the roads and he ..... errrrr ..... baulked it out a bit to make it go further using the stuff he gets me for railway ballast. He's got a heart of gold really though and always does me a good deal . Anyhoo, I'm lucky to have such a contact, but it's not a lot of use to you I'm afraid. You could have a search around your local area to see if there are any landscape suppliers. Much better than buying it from the big DIY stores in my experience.

OK so by now most will be aware that The Earl just didn't work out for the WGLR, so he's gone off to another railway where I know he'll behave himself and be well loved. In the meantime, I followed Philips link above and ended up the (very) proud owner of a kit built GRS gauge 3/G64 pannier tank.

Obviously, this is for the interchange siding at Gooey, so it's a bit of a shelf queen, but I have got feelers out to see if there are any G3 railways around these parts where she might get the occasional run (track power).

I've been doing a bit of research lately and the voices in my head have come up with a new location for the WGLR. The standard gauge interchange was originally envisaged as being at the Wetton end of the line, but the only place I could fit it in after last year's re-build was at Gooey station. The story now is that the Abermule to Kerry branch off the Cambrian line between Montgomery and Newtown wasn't 3 3/4 miles long - it was actually a whole 4 1/2 miles long and terminated at Gooey. There it had interchange facilities for both passengers and freight with the Wetton Gooey Light Railway which runs back into Shropshire to serve both Wetton and Cockshutt Mortimer. So this also means that the branch DIDN'T close to passengers in 1931 and neither did it close completely in 1956. Instead it was kept open until 1960 when the WGLR passed into preservation. In fact there have been rumours that the branch may be re-opened at some time in the future??????????

I must point out that the fact that the Kerry Branch was the last bastion of the Dean Goods 0-6-0 and that GRS are also making a G64 model of this, is PURELY coincidence. ;)

Anyway, enough of all this codswallop - you want to see pictures of nice shiney trains .

In a word..................... YES:bigsmile:

My plans for the pannier tank include re-painting in BR black, weathering and re-numbering as 3782. From more research, I've found that 3782 was stationed for many years at 84G Shrewsbury and so would be suitable to work up the Cambrian line (not that pannier tanks did very often = rule 8  ). BUT she was also often sub-shedded at Ludlow which meant she also often worked on the Wofferton Junction, Tenbury, Cleobury, Bewdley line. Ding dang do .

Here the pannier sits on the standard gauge siding alongside WGLR No.1 for comparison.

A comparison with something slightly larger which many will be more familiar with, the LGB Corpet.

As mentioned when I converted the Bachmann Thomas trucks to G.3, they are a little on the narrow side and this shows with the buffer spacing. This is quite fixable though and the trucks look right at home with the loco from every other angle.

Full house!! Gooey station with No.1 awaiting departure with a passenger working from platform 1, No.2 preparing a goods train in platform 2 and the pannier shunting the standard gauge siding.

Finally, the pannier crew find time to make a brew as No.2 and it's goods train set off for Cockshutt.

Very nice Mel..
I hope you're proud
Yes mate I am, thanks .
Knockout guv'nor!
Mind you, you're overlooking the Midland Railway's plans to extend their branch north from Malvern towards Tenbury via Bromyard. Obviousy that would have passed to the Western Region at some point....

Cheers mate, yes but that is just pure fantasy!!!:confused: :rolf::rolf:

Nice new loco, Mel. I can't see the number so cannot identify which Pannier class she is. Is it to be unlined black, or could she have lined black passenger livery? I believe some Panniers were - presumably those that were auto-fitted. Good to know the Kerry branch stayed open until the 60s!

It's 8750 Giles apparently a later build of the 57XX class. She will be unlined black - a proper work horse .
