I feel a bit dumb but I cannot find anywhere an explanation of what the purpose is of the yellow moulding slung under the tenders of several LGB steam locos on both sides. I have a Mogul and a Sumpter Valley and they both have it but can't see anything like it on most other locos. I just cannot think what it could possibly be for.
It's just a plastic moulding and obviously not something which would have been on the original loco. If they serve no purpose and are a bit ugly I will probably just cut them off. But I don't want to until I can be sure they are superfluous.

Hope someone smarter than me can come up with an answer!!

Thanks

David F

It's a re-railing ramp :nod::nod:

UK ones are a slightly different shape, and not necessarily painted yellow. I have a photo of the Royal Engineers on the Longmoor Military Railway in Hampshire being taught how to use one ;)

Good question!

And I see Rhino has already given you the answer too.

I wouldn't cut them off....

Thanks for the helpful replies - I never would have guessed. Decision is I will just paint them matt black to match the rest of the loco's 'undercarriage' rather than cut them off. Now to research how they were actually used and why it is only the separate tenders to locos that have them.......or at least in LGB world it seems to be.

Found this with a bit of Googling after using the picture in a search could be a solution.

On LGB models that yellow plastic piece is a factory transport / shipping spacer.
Purpose:
  • It locks or limits the bogie (truck) movement during transport
  • Prevents the bogies from swivelling, bouncing, or stressing the wiring between tender and pickups
  • Helps protect details and wheelsets while the model is in its box
  • Sometimes also keeps the model sitting level in the packaging
Important:
It is not part of the operating model.
It should be removed before running the tender on the track.
LGB nearly always uses bright yellow for these shipping protections so they’re obvious and don’t get forgotten.

GAP, Google have got it totally wrong. The yellow items attached to the Sumpter Valley tender are re-railing ramps. They have absolutely nothing to do with being a factory/ shipping spacer.

Here are the ramps on the front of my Bachmann Lyn (currently having battery R/C installed). Same shape, different color. I don't use Google much, but I'm finding some, not all, other AI searches return absolute rubbish and at the least, very verbose. I have found more modern rerailer versions advertised by RR equip companies. Yellow seems to be the standard color. I may have to paint mine.

Yep!
When AI makes a howler...
It verbosely justifies it.. Reminds me of the 'schoolboy howlers' you used to see...

i am just afraid of the moment, when A.I.s will change from counsellors to executioners.
without any humans involved, to notice erroneous decisions.
Yep, Google AI told me that, in order to get at the battery on my bike which is behind the LH side panel, I needed to take off the seat first (not easy) then remove two upper bolts blah blah blah.

In reality, there is one bolt in the lower middle of the panel which you remove, then lift the cover upwards .................................. :lipssealed::lipssealed::lipssealed:

Thanks for the replies and the time taken to answer my query.
3 lessons learned:
1) they are fixed replicas of rerailing ramps stored slung under the tender to be removed, secured to track in front of a derailed bogie or axle anywhere along the train, and used to retail by very slowly pulling the wheels up the ramp back onto track,
2) u tube always has an answer - great vids of real world examples of their use, and
3) AI does not always have the answer so dont rely on it unless confirmed by other reliable sources (such as experts!!)
Have a good one

I must admit, that currently I am not openly using AI, I appreciate that it is embedded in a number of tech items, where use is automatic, but at this moment in time, I would not consider asking it a question, or doing a search (or whatever you do), I prefer the good old fashioned search engine ;)

As in all things there are yes and no to the use of AI. I have found it good to answer questions that a google search is unable to do, wont talk about it as it is very political. But the answer was pretty much along the lines that I thought with only 1 being missing that I was able to find elsewhere.

As has been seen in the forum it is superb at putting scenery of your asking to the back of your line, ok not to everyones taste but fun and in my case much better than a boring old brown fence. I am wherever I post them trying to show a before and after pic.

So, should the A in AI stand for Apocryphal rather than Artificial ? As in, AI is the new AS ? Apocryphal Story. Or is that BS ;) Max
More allegorical story - I remember reading about a preacher who had used an AI programme to make Bible study notes from his sermon (he was actually writing about how to use AI intelligently)

In his sermon, he had referred to the injustice of Joseph's situation, and referred to Paula Vennels as that was in the news at the time.

The AI produced study notes referred to Paul of Ennels :D:D

Jimmy that came from a search engine so beware AI is creeping into everything.
