this is my first venture out doors in g scale but there has previously been various tinplate and lego railways in the garden serving mines and Quarry's dug into the flower beds but this time i have decided to do it properly and as such i present the very beginnings and ongoing construction of the
Seaguard Atek and Riften Railroad or (SAAR) for short basically my intentions are for a roughly 3ft 6 mining railroad somewhere in south america or africa serving the basic function being that of hauling ore to the port and empty's back aswell as being a general carrier the ore is atm thin air but i want it to be unique what ever it is (any suggestions?) im starting track laying from the mine end sort of in reverse from the big railways! and will eventual get to the port the other end im sort of inclined to go for steam diesel transition era which means i can run what i want! and the basic ore traffic will consist of 6 steel wagons and a caboose.
its hopefully going to be like a giant dumbell with balloon loops at both ends and 2 loops in between worked by tokens on account of it being single track im more heading towards operational aspects with this for more fun ideally rc will be used in locos but that's way off yet !.
anyway lets get on with it to start with here are some pictures of the mine site showing the sidings and balloon loop temporarily laid to get a feel of the site.
the mine loader will be on the middle 2 of the 5 tracks and you can fit 6 loaded wagons in the loadout tracks the balloon loop is only there for when i want to just run trains from end to end.
this view showing the mine run-round temporarily laid out with 8 steel wagons just to gauge train length 7 cars and a caboose is about the limit.
its nice scenes like this im hoping to achieve despite all the concrete and giants plants if you concentrate on the motive power its not to bad.
so there you are pictures! i do fear this i going to be very much a garden with a railway becuase their are a lot of plants and it being ground level it may be a bit lost in the landscape some times! i am aware that i should have as wide radius curves as possible and this is necessary since i want to run big diesels like the USAT GP38s and hopefully a pair of 2-8-2s and artic locos the minimum being R1 and R3 out on the main line.
track is to be laid on anything solid if possible like the mine are is to be on a paver set level and bricks for the sidings i know its not the best but it will work and has done in the past ballast on top of the bricks laying track and miniature railways for a living im sure it will be fine! will put an update when there is some......
