The Saga of My Ever Shrinking Railroad

Tim , oh I have lost interest at times.

Mostly when I realize I was going down a dead end or that I was in over my head regarding time and ability to commit, or that I simply wasn't interested anymore, that was part of the reason I have dismantled more than a couple of layouts.

But that nagging goading feeling in the back of my mind (call it the Muse, or maybe just simple neurosis) keeps me trying different ideas until I find the best solution for my situation, switching this layout to a harbor theme was one of those constant nagging goading mind pushes. If I was to offer any advice I'd say back off for a while, take some time and read or go hiking/walking/driving whatever, because it sounds more like burnout than disinterest. That's happened to me, I had to drop a lot of ideas when I burned the old layouts, sold off alot of the stuff that was just extraneous and had become a distraction.

BTW my changes may take alot longer to effect, I mounted the LGB three way turnout, and the long side happens to be on the wrong side, which adds about 2 inches of extra straight, that pushes my lift bring and hence the curved track on the peninsula also, farther over, so I will have to rework that part of the layout, its doable but it will take time as I still have a garage full of crap and half of that is sitting on top of the track.

But I know what needs to be done, plus I have an idea I want to try, namely to see if I can modify decrepit Lionel bascule bridge for use on this layout...just might work, maybe.

Been studying harbor layouts again. Since I drew a suggested plan idea on MLS , kinda got some more ideas last weekend, top pic is the version based on the suggested plan, bottom version is based on a plan found on Carl Arendts scrapbook, modified into G, again all R1 curves. Both are self contained Harbor Transfer layouts complete with car float in/out service and could be an interesting ops layout in a small footprint:

Just to show another way to approach a self contained switching layout, the bottom version is a lot bigger but its based on a real facility in Harlem NYC. Maybe its just me, but the more I study these the more I am surprised they are not more commonly modeled in any scale, the float operation is a perfect excuse for a small totally self contained switching layout with lots of action and a roundy-round option.

Posting some more current pictures of my 4'x4' portable pizza layout:

Certainly jam-packed with interest and detail - and very whimsical too:thumbup::thumbup:

Do you ever take it out to shows Vic?

Yes, I have two shows planned for later this summer.

This is my portable pizza, the whole thing is only 4' square.

Just a quick video showing the layout at this years Big Train Show, here in So Cal showing the layout to date. I have another short video still to upload:

That´s an approach to consider. Looks as though everything runs according to plan 8)

Heres the second short video, just a birdseye view of the layout, just for fun.
