Just make sure you are insured, because regardless of what is taken, if you are burgled, you will be p***ed off, with what ever is taken.

Very sad to hear about this. My own babies are kept indoors (with a functioning burglar alarm and CCTCV) and are fully insured, but I still wouldn't
want to have to replace them! As others say, fencing these won't be easy. Check GumTree as well as EBay - it has a lower profile, is more local and
offers more anonymity. I don't expect they'll make it up to Scotland, but if I hear/see anything at all, I'll let you know.

If you or anyone else is in the market for security equipment, I am happy with the NetVue Vigil outdoor cameras that I've bought off Amazon -
they're well made, inexpensive, give a good quality image (jncluding night vision), and the company seems very responsive and helpful. Amazon have them
in their Black Friday sale (I picked one up yesterday at 30% off: < £25 including delivery). I have no connection with the company other than a satisfied customer!

i might even rig one up so I can watch trains going round - they only need a 12V supply after all...

Make sure you name them on the policy if they're individually or collectively over the High Value items limit. It only cost me a few pounds extra per year to do this on my
own home insurance policy (once I'd explained to the agent exactly what they were!! "They're full size steam locomotives?? Let me check with my manager." )

Further thought if anyone has access to the 16mm Forum might be worth posting the loss in it.

I have posted the whole message on the 16mm forum.

Good luck with retrieving them.

All the best,

Duncan

That's probably good advice. Based on Barbara's recommendation I got a quote from Hiscox for collection insurance only, £10,000 cover for £84 / year, no need to itemise (so big print says, haven't read the small print) so probably more economical to try and get combined cover for house and contents with collection added. BTW trains are counted as "toys and dolls" in their categorisation. :)

Hi You Are correct it is much better to get house Buildings & Contents and then collection. Mine was not about theft so much but other disasters that can happen. I do have them all catalogued in MTC ( model train catalogue ) Which candownload for a small fee of the internet i have had it for a few years now. Barbara

At the prices charged for live steam locomotives are so high; probably a bank vault would be more appropriate for storing them these days....!!

It's interesting to encounter different views/opinions on insurance model railway stuff. Our household insurers say there's no need to declare as as "collection" as that normally means something which would be significantly diminished in overall value by the loss of one item from a group.

I Think i will stay with Hiscox as they are a very ethical insurer. Deal with them direct.

Buy yourself a site safe to store locos in or second best a higher security metal store. I have an Asgard steel store which has an integral steel floor, bolted down to a concrete slab, and multi-point high security door lock which is quite hard to break into without power tools making a lot of noise!:

I also have a site safe which is virtually impossible to break into and too heavy to move when full of locos!:

Further to my last post I can recommend Asgard to the highest level. I checked out all the brands of secure sheds / stores and their products were by far the best. They are also a tradition British company and make to order from their factory in Leeds. Their customer service was very good, even with though delivery date was delayed, they kept me informed and their delivery crew were very helpful, even though I didn't pay for erection they carried it through the house for me and even up to the end of the garden (uphill!). I chatted with the 2 crew and they explained that they were not couriers but employed just to deliver the Asgard kits and drove all over the country from Leeds, staying over-night in Travel Lodge hotels being in one region for several days before returning home.

An insurance policy is only as good as the records you have of the items lost, stolen or destroyed. Simply taking a video of your trains is better than nothing, but you will still need to itemize and provide a value. I looked at the MTC software and downloaded it. After only a few minutes of experimentation, I bought the "exhibition" version. It's only about $15.00! I don't plan to exhibit, but the other features are helpful and the price is the same as the standard version. Only improvement I might suggest is a way to hide the total cost or password protect that report!

Thank you for all your support. I'm insured with NFU Mutual. After a visit from the loss adjuster last week I have just received my cheque for the full value of everything stolen. I can't praise NFU Mutual highly enough but of course the value of the locos is more than monetary.
I wasn't aware that garage doors can be jimmied open so easily. A salutary lesson. I now have bolts which prevent the door from being opened, and I can deadlock the side door, so it makes it difficult to break into the garage without making a lot of noise. Fingers crossed the locos will appear sometime in the future, especially the coal fired one.

NFU Mutual will never compete with the bottom end of the market on premium, but the clue is in the name, and at times like these they will come up trumps
