Starting out with old LGB equipment

Now had Seuthe smoke fluid in and was smoking lovely but chimney seemed to get quite hot - is this normal for DCC or analogue on DCC (don't think there's a difference from my reading)?

Alex - does the loco have a 5 volt or 18/24 volt smoke generator? If it's a 5 volt version, it will not only get very hot, but also burn out rather quickly if used a lot! :o

It's 18v I imagine - its an old loco and only really started smoking once past 15v on jumbo power display - can only imagine its 18v.

Its a very old loco with metal swing arm rather than switch to turn smoke on or off (in this case bridging the circuit to switch on).

Sorry can't give any more details - not sure myself :(

Yes, that will (almost) certainly be an 18v smoke unit then - locos that old didn't have any kind of voltage stabilising electronics to work 5v lights or smoke. I think it was a while before they even got a couple of diodes for directional lights!

Hi Alex, You have to be careful when taking advice take a look at what you want to run. Your MTS system will run on a 18v or 20v LGB transformer. The track voltage is about 24 volts. If you use a system that is designed for HO i.e. 15v on the track it will still work but you will not get the full puling power from the motor . Remember Massoth make the LGB MTS 11 and MTS 111 so it is a perfect match.

Just a quick update,
Put the order into muns via website for a Massoth XLS loaded with correct sounds for BR194. Will be my first fitting of a decoder once it arrives.

Also managed to pick up a bargain LGB 55021 decoder (originally was thinking of Stainz from 78302 set till checked and found out need 55027 or following Muns advice going Massoth LS with 10 pin adaptor) so now after croc got to fit the 55021 into another loco.

Bachmann Annie won't do so it's either 23171 0-4-0 us style Stainz type or the old Lehman Porter. From reading brochures seems the 23171 *may* include the push in fitting for the decoder (hopefully) although may have to wait to get a Sprog (cheapest option) to program the CV.

May be getting a bit of a bonus payment so might treat myself to an updated DCC system (and if so put up the serial MTS II system back on eBay for cheap) - not a four figure sum so thinking something along lines of Piko Central Station 35010 and Massoth Navigator (can program then - so if get the bonus won't get the Sprog - unless too difficult to program with Massoth navigator). Will either continue to use Jumbo to power everything or sell on eBay (hopefully for more than paid for it) and replace with dedicated power supply.

Regards

Alex
