So, I wanted to make absolutely sure before posting this, and today's mild weather has given me the chance to check one more time

Both these models seem to have a new generation decoder/ sound module with many more options than what I've previously encountered, 25 or so.

However, on both models, "Squealing brake off" is a function assigned to button no.2. I get no squealing brakes, on either model, whether or not the button is activated (on my Massoth Dimax controller).

Because it is happening on both brand new models with a new type of decoder, I doubt that both have a "fault" but rather I may be missing something important that makes this sound work properly. Everything else on both seem to be normal. Sometimes the sounds get a bit confused or out of synch, but this is rectified, like so many things by switching the Dimax off and on. But squealing brakes there are none.

Anybody got any ideas (esepcially people with one of these models)?

Not got those models, but squealing brakes also used to depend on travelling at (at least) a certain speed, else you did not get a squeal.

Have you also tried slowing down at different rates?

My 20-year old Aster LGB White Pass mike has 'brake squeal' in analogue mode - you just decrease the power gently, and Robert is your father's brother.

Yes, I recall that being mentioned on here. Today I got it up to 16 on the Dimax and then slowly slowed it down. No brake sound.

The way its described ( hit button to turn it off) is new too. Most of my older locos have it set to on as a default, but each one is slightly different in how it is triggered, i.e you need a slowish slowdown to trigger it but none require getting up a big lick first. I’ve got a Saxon Mallet, about 20 years old, I think, that is verrrrry loud and always triggered, and that has an LGB decoder. Usually no way to disengage brake sound completely except disengaging all sounds so I can see why its offerered now. But I would like it on, especially for the eye watering prices I paid for these two!

I get the breaking squeal from my newest 32 function LGB locos by going very quickly to a speed of zero. I've got the breaking CV set to 20 as a minimum, and some are higher, on all my locos so actual breaking is not abrupt when the control is set to zero.

Ah thank you, I tried them again and got the sounds. Not very loud especially on the Saxon steam loco. But it worked as you said. It looks like these new locos’ decoders to are set up to provide a smooth stop. So if I have it on notch 7, and then turn it straight to zero it still coasts smoothly to a stop, whereas if I did that with the other locos, they would stop dead. It looks from the flimsy instruction booklet that there might be guidance to adjust the CVs so hopefully I can work out how to make the sound a bit louder. I’m surprised its so low compared with all the other sounds which are baffling the neighbours…
