OK. On a trip to the smoke (missus' birthday) and took a quick trip to Princes Risborough (as one does) and couldn't resist the attached. It was sold as a Berkley - I assume they mean a Barclay.

I've done a bit of searching and haven't yet tracked down anything which is a close match for it. Looks like a plastic scratchbuild on an LGB power bogie. It needs a little bit of tidying but it's nicely engineered with a switch which looks as if it can be used as track powered or, via a socket on the rear, battery powered.

Any ideas of its origin or the prototype on which it could be based?

Looks very nice, is it an 0.4.0 or bigger, I can't tell. Definitely looks like a Barclay, sort of a smaller version of a Cambeltown and Machrihanish loco. It may have an actual prototype but not something I'm familiar with. Lovely model though.

A 2-4-0 Barclay - try Jersey Railways .
See the first loco on this page http://www.sa-transport.co.za/trains/sa_steam/class_misc/misc.html
In fact, I wonder if it was originally a GRS kit.
Nice model - I hope you enjoy it :)

Thanks David

Yes looks very much like the Jersey Barclay. Thanks for the link. Not sure if it was a GRS kit. Nothing like it listed there now - unless it is discontinued.

Yes BTW it is a 2-4-0

Wow! Thanks for the life story. So, built in Scotland, worked in Jersey, retired to South Africa. Clearly its mythical twin will now have gained a second life in Cheshire.

Always wanted one of those, and by the time the chequebook and I got round to it, GRS had stopped doing the kits. Gnashing of teeth.

Is the valve gear and add-on, or does it look like LGB parts? I'm guessing the donor power bogie might have been from the OBB diesel.

Jonathan

Oh, so it was a GRS kit p thanks for that.

Yes, the valve gear is ex LGB - the part no for the bogie shown underneath is 2090

Prefer the Barclay anyday.

Definitely a promotion.. Serious work too, adding not just the cylinders and valve gear, but also the outside frames and cranks.. It was those that made me think the donor was a 2095 diesel..

PS : Just followed the links to pics of the real thing. Fact there's also a drawing there may mean the plasticard has to come out to play at some point..

Not sure how the cranks have been been extended - not taken it apart yet. I want to do a respray sometime so am going to have to do a dismantle - maybe I'll then find out. Can't figure out yet how it's held together - I hope it wasn't just glued on to the chassis!

If it's all been glued together and you find you don't want it any more...

I'll bear that in mind - very briefly!

The wheels aren't spoked - they look like plain disk. Maybe it's been re-wheeled

It looks as if the axles have been extended with plastic tubing for the extended cranks

Hope nobody minds raising thus old thread again.

Just out of interest there is a super pic of this Loco in the April 2015 issue of Byelines. Looked at all the links in this thread and Googled the number to see if I could find out current status. If she is in danger as are mane "Preserved" Locomotives in SA she would appear to be a suitable candidate for Statfotld Barn. Would go nicely with the Burton and Ashby Tram if they laid another Rail to give 3'6".
