Getting closer to completion. Still a bit more detailing needed and I need to have a spell of decent weather to give her a few test-runs and configure the sound card. But here she is so far........

The side bars and piston rods needs need a bit of spit and polish!

The speaker attached to the underside of the cab roof is a little too obvious at the moment - hopefully blackening the roof will help it to disappear. Coal will be added to the bunker (which holds the sound card) and a wooden lid will be loosely placed over it (as per the original).

GRS are having problems supplying whitemetal castings at the moment and so I had to make my own backhead details. No idea what the original looked like, so it's a bit generic.

Just realised I haven't fixed the oilers (made from mapping pins) in place on the running plate - and have ordered a some whitemetal re-railing jacks from GRS (but it could be a couple of months before they arrive).

Trying to decide whether to line her out (in gold) or leave her unlined as she would have run on the Southwold. Nameplates about to be ordered from Narrow Planet and chopper couplings will be fitted (maybe from Swift Sixteen).

So, nearly there!

Wow ! Thats really good - an excellent piece of meodel making. Maybe it will inspire a bit more scratch building around the forum. Although its none of my business, I think I wouldn't line this one - all it needs is a few plates, and its got the 'Light railway' look.

Yes - I think you're right. I've left my other former Southwold loco unlined and I think it looks OK. Don't usually add maker's plates but in this case I think it would add something. By looking at other people's models (eg Mel's recent Simplex model), I'm beginning to feel that it's the finer superdetailing (eg oil can, fire-irons etc) which really brings a model to life.

Thanks for the encouragement chaps. My thinking is that if I can do it then anyone can. If you look at the account of the build on my blog you'll see I'm very much feeling my way with this scratch-building malarkey, and my construction skills are fairly basic (little more than those needed to build a kit).

There are some really well skilled members on this forum and so there is already plenty of really good guidance on scratchbuilding techniques available on here. I drew on examples provided by tramcar trev, Woderick, persistent_bodger and gregh among others (sorry if I've forgotten you). A quick search will throw up all sorts of useful info.

I've always liked the look of the Southwold Sharpies and hoped one day I would be able to build one. Fortunately the Playmobil motor block was close enough to the loco's dimensions to enable me to get cracking. She's not as smooth running as those built on LGB and Piko motor blocks but to my mind she look the part.
