I've been having fun making some little people for my railway, using a few different techniques.

Photogrammetry - taking lots of photos, then using software to stich them into a 3D model. I started out with this young lady called Annie. She's an American student studying in the UK.

The link to the 3D file is here:

I also tried a sarcophagus that's sitting in the grounds of Kingston Lacy Hall in Dorset.

The little person next to it is made using another interesting technique, using some experimental code to create a 3D model from a single 2D image. Details on the RM Web forum here: Creating printable little people in 5 minutes using just the internet

This was the image I started with:

1623422162_Manintophat.PNG.473e554372be93f9fa7295e0ed45276c.PNG

And here's a family group I did for another modeller. We did a full photogrammetric scan of Dad, but the 2 boys are both just from photos, processed to 3D and cleaned up a little.

Printing is on my upgraded Elegoo Mars 2. Most of these figures have been printed to 7mm scale, but I am now re-printing to 32mm for my layout. First is a driver for my 3D printed Rocket, along with a Mary Poppins character to accompany some errant schoolchildren..

This looks to be a real game changer. Have you tried it on seated figures yet, these always appear to be the things in shorter supply.

Not tried it yet.
If you have a suitable photo - a pretty much head on shot of someone seated, I can give it a go!

Hi
are you using an iPhone to scan with? , I understand that the later iPhones have the scanning technology built in ( 11/12) etc to be able to do this with a phone. I have been looking at an app called ‘Scaniverse’ that seems to give good results.
I am hoping to upgrade my phone to one of these later versions ( I bought a ‘reworked‘ X but the battery does not last 5 hours on standby!….so that’s going back! )
Can we keep this thread going as there seems to be a lot of potential in it?
thanks
Dave

No, I don't use the iPhone with the LIDAR technology, as it's quite slow and not that accurate. I would say it's on a par with using a Kinnect 3D scanner - something I've played with in the past. The phone scanning here was done using Kiriengine, running on a Samsung Android phone in pure photogrammetry (multiple photos) mode. Kiriengine does support LIDAR on the iPhone, so you could try both ways.

The paid for version of Kiriengine allows import of photos, rather than just acquiring them through the app. This allows photos to be taken in different modes - for instance as super wide or super tall, or to use shots from a DSLR or with some post processing to improve the end result.

My aim is to get a new Structured Light scanner, such as Revopoint Range. They capture both textures and point clouds at the same time, giving much improved results.

Making seated models is very easy. What sort of thing did you have in mind? Age, gender, era etc.

Oh East German Winter circa 1981, mostly 60’s type clothing. Very out of date for the time.

This sort of thing? Ignore colours and errors on rendering, these will not be present when printing.

Steady on, family forum and all that
Are the faces taken from a photo or AI produced?
Until you pointed them out, I genuinely hadn't noticed! This is a 3d model from Makehuman, so neither a real person or AI, just a modified 3D computer model. The software allows a user to tweak many aspects of the standard human model, from face and body shape to clothing and hair. Same with the poses. The underlying skeleton can be manipulated to any pose quite easily.
