Setting up a USA Trains smoke unit with QSI Titan decoder

Hi all,

In the process of programming a QSI Titan 10 amp decoder for a USA Trains GP30. All wired up and works ok although again QSI factory defaults are not what the decoder comes shipped. Anyway I have direct wired the smoke unit and fan to the decoder as per wiring diagram. The manual States the unit should work with F12 but when I press F12 it turns on rear marker lights and that's it. I am also using the QSI programmer, CV manager to make life easier, well yeah, right.

How do I get the smoke unit to work on DCC. Using an NCE Procab. I have searched this on the net and it mentions about the flicker box CV. On CV manager this CV is all greyed out and I cannot do anything with this.

On a positive note this GP30 is fitted with two speakers and the sound is now superb stereo. Really makes a difference.

Can anyone help on the smoke unit and advise on the CV manager program, this is top of the range QSI decoder with tons of features but CV manager will not access them all.

Thanks

Steve

Maybe CV Manager software needs an update?

I do have a QSI programmer as well as my SPROG for programming, but tbh I haven't touched my QSI decoders for a while, I've no idea what the current version of the software should be in order to program all the functionality of the Titan.

Have a look here Steve

I found the Titan so frustrating after waiting years for it to materialise, whenever I queried it it was always "in two weeks". However, when finally it did appear there seemed to be none of the much acclaimed Plug and Play. The sounds and options in the pre-launch videos and blurb were outstanding but in the end I simply gave up on it. :-[

I put a Titan in my Aristo consolidation and despite being pre-programmed for 'large steam' the actual sound produced is a garbled mess that sounds vaguely like a diesel. I don't have the expertise to start messing with it so I run it with the sound off, which is a bit of a waste.

I put its predecessor in a K27 it was hopeless sounds were a shambles, the control of the loco went all over the place it went back.

In addition to my post above with the link to Greg Elmassion's site for 'Smoke with the QSI,
Here it is again just in case:

He also gives the command values for a complete reset. If your decoder is garbled or not performing as it should, this might help......

Thanks Mike but I'm ashamed to say that Greg's link might as well be written in Chinese for all the sense it makes to me. Although I use DCC for the features it offers how it works remains a total mystery to me. My other locos were purchased with decoder fitted or I got them professionally installed. When I got the Consolidation I decided that I should stop being a wuss and do it myself. After all 'plug and play' - how hard can it be? So I went for the recommended Titan decoder but it has not gone as smoothly as I hoped (the loco is a lousy runner anyway but that is not the fault of the decoder). One of these days I must bring the loco to one of you Essex lads, who seem to be good at this sort of thing, and see if it can be sorted out.

Hi Philip

I have one of the Aristocraft consolidations (the old C16 and the 'standard gauge' one) and the 'standard gauge' model can be a little problematic over points due to the driver wheel profiles on the block. This is a common problem with this loco, but can be ameliorated by either re-profiling the wheels (ok if you have a mate with a lathe) or by running them in. I tried the latter and it besides a little 'waddle' over points, it seems to be ok. Shame as it is a nice looking steamer.

It would be good to see you up in these parts.
I have a couple of GSS open days on 26th July and a late start one on September 12th so you are very welcome to come up but we also have many more run by the other north Essex GSS members on different dates. If you would like I could pm you the email of our local GSS secretary, Gordon, to send you all the dates and timings etc.
If you come up to any of the meets just give me a nod and I can bring along me laptop, the QSI progammer, rollers and a piece of track and we can test out, maybe re-instruct the QSI decoder etc.

Ah, you say it does not run well to start with??
Whilst DDC *can* help with poor running loco's, it is always better to get the engine running properly before trying to add DCC..

This, of course, has nothing to do with your smoke problems! ::)

If , as it seems, you have the offer of help from someone who knows the QSI product. Then bite their hand off!! - Cake, or other remuneration, is always welcome! ;)

Good luck!
PhilP.

Yes, mine is the standard gauge version with the over gauge wheels so it waddles, particularly on curves. Imposing looking loco though. I will definitely take you up on your kind offer. 26th July is no good for me but September 12th should be ok. I'll PM you nearer the time :)
