Was looking at Spikes videos of his viaducts on youtube and noticed his other vids with some on the Rio Grande 'Ski Train'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQYEu3elF7g&NR=1 < Link To http://www.youtube.com/wa.h?v=ZQYEu3elF7g&NR=1

and then I found a real 1:1 scale vid of the demised train that looked very very similar from a camera angle point of view.

Shame the real trtain was sold to operate under a different banner in Canada. Another little bit of Rio Grande history wafts away.

I am sorry and I know that these are not videos but just to support Spike's great vids of his Ski Train here are a couple of old shots of mine on the layout as it was a couple of years back. I will get round to making some moving pictures! I am going to try one of those miniature ones that Robsmorgan has posted about.

There is a bigger station and two new lines and a spur passing by on the other side of those bushes and rocks now.

The downhill slope, always a little hazardous for a string of cars that weigh as much as these little beauties!

Great pics Mike.

I like doing low down shots as it gives a real feel......then I noticed the ruddy great pushbike and cover in the background

Hullo Mike!

I was hoping to pop down to Northern Essex today, but I'm still recovering from the lurgy.

Hope your Open Day goes well....

Hi Giz
Are you meaning my open day.. or Mike (Spike's) As Mine is on September 26th! If you were meaning me then you just gave me the fright of my life as we are shifting tons of stuff in a van today....no railway activity for the next few days........

Yeah, know what you mean about unexpected backgrounds.
I took these two on the newer extra lines. The Geeps can be seen passing on the other 'old' line in the background. Will get out the kit when the little video camera arrives

The F3 unit has had two replacement horns as they were lost' in these shots due to plant attack somewhere on the line

I was told by Bigjack that you have an Open Day today?

And he's posted that he's going to a nearby Open Day only this morning!

I guess you can expect a few surprise(d) visitors then....

The big man is up a ladder on the roof at the moment, fitting his digital aerial, but he'll probably be ringing around later....

How different your line looks in those pics mike i too losted my horns on my F3 got some spares as i couldn't find them .

Phew!!! Just spoken to Bigjack and he had the wrong date in his head (think it was one of those dates that used to get in sticky packets at Christmas) and my open day is definitely the 29th Septermber!
He is now taking his pills and will feel fine in a short time.

Anyway back to Rio Grande stuff..........

Hi Richie

Spikes layout is great for watching those loveeeely longgggg strings roll by.

I always now have a set of spare horns......the F3 has lost them again and when I 'hoover' the track I forget that they might be around and they just disappear with the leaves and things.

Just off to finish clearing the garage ready for the big refit. It has taken three van-loads already (mostly not train related I must add). All me 'extra' G scale stuff ( new items not yet opened, items due for weathering, locos ready for updating, building needing customising or construction, stuff ready for selling on etc etc) is now stored in the study floor to ceiling. I now know why most model railway shops will not stock G scale....the boxes just fill space! The garage just swallowed it up and I didn't really realise how much kit there was lying around. I discovered things that I had forgotten I had under the piles of boxes. Some may even find its way onto the forum or fleabay!

Hi Mike
Good to hear your getting on well with the garage refit will it include a G scale ceiling layout  will have to keep an eye on E bay if you maybe selling Rio Grande items . Look forward to seeing some video footage on your line Sara & chloe would like some train crashes please , Dave put on a good crash for Sara last week with the Zephyr crashing into the rear of a Southern coal train :wits: The Rio Grande Ski train video that you've put on looks like Amtrak's FP40 locos and coaches did Amtrak run this train in these colours ??

Hi Richie
It is another sad tale of a service that could have been 'restarted' in the 2009-2010 season but seems to have been scuppered by Amtrak's slow involvement after the train was sold off and misdirected catagorising the Ski Train as a commuter train and not an excursion one so double costs in insurance.

A potted history gleaned form various sources:
The train was instituted by the Rio Grande in 1940 and ran from Union Station in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver,_Colorado < Link To Denver, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado < Link To Colorado for 56 miles (90 km) to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Park_Resort < Link To ski resort town of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Park,_Colorado < Link To Winter Park, Colorado. The train's scenic route left Union Station and traveled through northwest suburban Denver, generally parallel to South Boulder Creek, past http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinecliffe,_Colorado < Link To Pinecliffe and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollinsville,_Colorado < Link To Rollinsville.
The route climbed about 4,000 feet (1,200 m) and passed through 29 tunnels before reaching the final mountain underpass, the 6.2-mile (10.0 km) long http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moffat_Tunnel < Link To Moffat Tunnel. This is the highest railroad tunnel in the United States and passes under the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_Divide < Link To Continental Divide.
The train stopped less than 100 yards from the base of the ski lifts of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Park_Resort < Link To Winter Park Resort. There was one trip in each direction per day, with a travel time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, assuming no delays from freight rail traffic.
The Ski Train carried skiers to Winter Park Resort from December through March each ski season between 1940 and 2008-2009.
In 1984, Denver businessman Phil Anschutz purchased the Rio Grande and then in 1988, purchased the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP), merging the two under the larger railroad's name. As part of the deal, a subsidiary of Anschutz Company would buy the Ski Train and operate it as a separate venture. They continued losing some money in the venture, but it was something they "wanted to do," according to company spokesman Jim Monaghan.

As for the reasons leading to the sale of the historic train, it was a combination of things. Monaghan cited four problems faced by the Ski Train, in no specific order.
[*]overall cost increases, particularly for liability coverage[*]operating issues with freight trains over the route owned by SPs successor, the Union Pacific railroad[*]uncertainty surrounding the redevelopment of Union Station and the Ski Train's place in that development (I blogged about this http://coloradorailroads.blogspot.com/2009/01/dbj-future-denver-union-station-may.html < Link To here)[*]a weakened overall economy Where have we heard the same excuses for the end of a service to the public

The FP40s were purchased in 2000 and one of them broke down on its debut!

Here is a few vids of the cars and FP40s being dragged up to Canada after it was sold of in 2009 : first headed by Union Pacific and then CN Dash 9s(?)
