Afternoon I am looking for ideas of putting tiles on a wooden roof, the building is in a damp garage, do I use paper or board? what gsm? and what size of tile? I have used strips with cuts for tiles and overlaid in the past when in O Guage Les

I wonder if self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles (cut to required sizes - strip or individual roof tile) might fit the bill? Certainly no problem in the kitchen subject to a steam mop!

I think, if overlapped, the weather may get underneath them and loosen the adhesive over time??

I`ve done this with roofing felt?

I got the idea from Mel.

Take a strip an inch wide and make cuts every inch along one edge half an inch in, to get a `feathered` look. Glue on the bottom of the roof with Evilstick.

Add more strips as above, over lapping each half an inch so you just see the cuts. Also offset each strip to get the tiled effect.

Do both sides of the roof and cap with a strip that isn`t cut.

That`s how I did the roof on the building on the left of this photo....

You can buy 1:24 roof tiles and slates from dolls 'houses. Here are a couple of sites selected at random:

One option I use is wood - tongue depressors! They can be bought off the internet easily (there was a firm in Northern Ireland). I just cut them up into tiles (secateurs or tin snips) and glue using a Pu Sealant for outside use.

Paint and varnish and thats it. My station has been out all year (longer than previous years) and the roof has been the most resilient part

An option I used in the past which is vary good outside. I managed to get a load of Formica unused from somewhere. It is the Underneath that you want. Cut with a Hacksaw in a Jigsaw into Strips that are the Scale Length of the Tile. Then with a Hand Hacksaw cut around 2/3rd of the way through this to represent the Tile Width. You then have nice strips that can be glued to overlap thus creating a Tile effect. En rout during the Final Cut you may break off some corners. Do not worry this looks good for Broken Tiles. For indoors you could mount these tiles on some pre placed thin Ply. Outdoors as below.

Another option that I am using now outside is to make a sub roof from Clear Plastic Sheet from a DIY store. Then Lead Flashing is used on top of that, you can sometimes get small quantities of left Over Lead Flashing from Roofers. You will need to ask nicely or bribe them with Beer as the Scrap Price prompts them to save it. You can easily scribe a Tile effect in the lead with a Nail or even a Scriber if you have one.
