Removing the weights from Playmobil rolling stock

Last week Mobi asked for advice on this and I said I would post some photos showing how over the weekend. Unfortunately, as we are were recently told that the bungalow we are trying to sell a house 55 miles away has subsidence, my promise slipped my mind. However, I remembered it this afternoon when I came across a Playmobil truck chassis, so the photos are taken and I shall aim to post them this evening.

Here we are then. It`s relatively easy to remove the weights, although it tends to be more difficult with the older rolling stock because the composition of the plastic is different and, as a result, the plastic is less flexible. In the late 1990s/early 2000s, concern about a possible carcinogenic material being used in plastics for children`s toys meant that the "recipe" for Playmobil had to be changed and this means that the plastic is now a more flexible. (This is not just a problem for Playmobil, it affects all makers of plastic toys.)

The first picture shows the underside of a truck, the grey rectangle being a cover which holds the weight in place. At each end, two protruding pieces hold the weight in place lengthwise (and you only the two pieces nearer the camera in this picture, but you can just see the tops of the equivalent pieces at the far end). On each side, there are two "stepped" clips which hold hold the weight in place against the bottom of the chassis, so it doesn`t drop off when the truck or carriage is running. (The weight cover is square, although in the picture, perspective makes it look oblong.)

The second picture shows two of the end pieces. They are held tightly against the plastic crosspiece, but they are not clipped to it.

In the third picture, you can see two of the side pieces which have a "step" in them which means that they are clipped under the side frame.

Now for removing the weights.

Turn the piece of rolling stock upside down (after removing the roof, if you`re dealing with a goods van or a coach) and then grip the weight with the fingers and thumb of one hand (first picture). While gripping it firmly, with the thumb of the other hand on the middle of the side frame, prise the side frame gently back, while lifting the side of the weight nearest the side frame up. This should cause the clips to spring free and the weight cover on that side is now slightly raised and pressing the side frame open a bit.

Repeat the above process on the other side, and you can then wriggle/jiggle the weight cover off, thus releasing the weight. It may take a bit of practice at first, but it does work.

Nicely done and worth doing.

The weights are not necessary in any Playmobil stock, EXCEPT the Tank Wagons. I would strongly urge anyone to leave them be on those alone to give stability.

I have fitted a lot of my PM vans with LGB roller pick ups and I use the empty weight box to hold a circuit board to run the wires to before the supply rises up into the van.

I tend to fit the empty weight boxes on all stock for the sake of appearance, but not the weight! For some reason unclear to me the latest red drop sided wagon in the current diesel set has a revised chassis where the weight and box are no longer central and cannot be placed centrally.

It can however be removed just as easily as shown above.

I have no idea why that has been done. Any ideas?
