With all these things there is a range of quality but prices are constantly falling, with the machines getting more accurate and faster. If you want a good brand even twice the price is affordable for a small business and I'm sure there are ones that can be hired as with commercial copiers. You can even buy big CNC cutters starting at £10,000 and there are plenty of used ones available.

You all know my passion for "high tech" solutions. Seriously if you want to cut, engrave or shallow 3D machine e.g. cut window sashes in 3mm thick plastic, then this is the tool for you. I have not bought one yet but I know a couple of professional modelmakers (for whom I subcontract at times) who have these and they are the beez kneez. Using a 1mm dia carbide cutter they leave a barely perceivable radius in corners. Far neater for machining plastic than a laser but the laser never needs sharpening, just a new tube and laser gives a finer cut so you get truly square internal corners, laser needs to be very powerful to cut brass but this will cut brass/aluminium/bronze/ steel (but slowly) and does a very nice job of it.stockers said:These 'bots' that creep around websites have seen this thread. the advert at the top of my page is now showing milling machine sales.
And to rub salt into collective wounds, it cost less than one locomotive, yet is faster than a speeding locomotive (or a Bondi tram). I VERY RARELY ENDORSE a product but this is spot on for the serious modeller.

Not sure it is big enough..
Need to produce a 'Pullman' size coach side in a single piece really.
No idea of the speed of the machine (to produce an article).
Would need dust extraction facility, so there is another cost.
In a previous existence, helped a colleague with a stepper-motor driven unit used to make parts for dolls houses.. The processing power for this was a BBC Micro..
Biggest problem was it overheating and shutting down, despite being in its' own housing with cooling fans. The filters would clog with monotonous regularity until dust extraction from the router was installed.

Mate the only trouble with being the only chap on the block with one would be that you would have more work than it could handle.....bobg said:Hmm! Tempted by that.

Somehow I wish that was the likely case, but round here I'm the only kid on the block that plays trains in my sizes. Nearest I got is an 'N' Gauge whalla up the street and he makes nothing, just buys in what he wants.
Interesting though, I looked at them on UK Evilbuy last night and the same machine (all from HK) varies in price from £385 to £5K
