Reading a decoder

Hi All,

Can anyone advise me if it is possible to determine the make and model of an installed decoder chip without disassembling the loco?

Shiny rails,

Yep, you can definitely determine the make by reading the proper CV that gives the manufacturer number.

This is CV8.

But, not all manufacturers support the CV7 version number... depends on the manufacturer.

Here's a page that lists the manufacturer id's:

You need a DCC system that has a "programing track", otherwise properly known as "service mode"

Sort of. You need some gear such as the Sprog. It is still a bit vague (as is this answer - sorry) - but it can get complicated.

Thanks guys. I am just "calibrating" the speed/acceleration and deceleration of my locos at the moment in anticipation of some automation on my layout soon. I have a few old ones that came modified and never really spent the time to document what they are (not even sure if I was aware in the first place in any event). They do not all have the same indexing :(

Nice list Greg - not seen that before, but I have a decoder showing 255?
