being able to up or down vote a post seems to make the "like" stuff redundant.

It also opens the door to downvoting which will be interpreted (as it should) as a negative comment.

Some people get all bent out of shape if you don't agree with them, so I'd stand by for the fireworks.

(just seen recently on a thread I am on... "why don't the manufacturers wise up?" .... gave an opposing viewpoint and immediate nastiness)

Slight variation of the themes, but how do I turn the smiley faces back on. The ones at the top of the reply screen are dim & obviously switched off
 
I note that over the weekend I picked up quite a few likes and reactions to some of my posts but the total of likes on the members list remains the same, under this new setup do likes no longer register. It's all getting too technical for a simple boy from the country like me. Bring back low tech.

Seems to me nobody either understands or wants these ^ / v arrow voting things so I humbly suggest to admin that this feature is removed.
 
I'm sure the owner/admins may not like this thread, but when you spring new features unannounced (and thus without explanation and reason for adding) you risk this kind of reaction.

This could have simply been an update that turned this features on without the admins knowing.

I can do without the push, without the red question marks that I cannot make work, and the up/down vote.

The problem doesn't necessarily lie with the site owners or admins but with the service providers. When I first started in computing, software was usually written because someone had asked for it to be written. Now, however, with things like the internet and operating systems for hardware there is a self-interest in producing software to make your product "different" or "better". You see it in mobile 'phones as a prime example; the very great majority of users use only the basic apps most of the time. And it's the same with providers of software for websites and internet browsers. The people who write the software have a self-interest in keeping changing it, whether the users want the changes or not.

Agreed, the potential feature content is from the developers. The issue with "feature creep" won't change... it's a reality of "new", "different", better",,,

But rolling out a new release, controlling new and old functions that may be turned on, or back on, are the site administrator's functions, the software is on their (out) server.

So, like I said, when you (the site managers/owners) roll out (install) a new version, it behooves them to watch for changes... often this is in the release notes.

I refer back to my post concerning user-interface, and software by committee. - I doubt the release notes are particularly edifying?

I remember when I first started programming in 1979, the programmers' notes for error messages when testing programs ran something like this:

ERROR CODE 004: if this is a live run, report the error code to the computer operations supervisor. If it is a test run, report the error code to the software operations supervisor.

That was it! No indication as to why the code might have been generated or any other information. As for me, I was both programmer and software operations supervisor and computer operations supervisor!

I've never been one for "change - for changes sake"! It seems to me that many of these changes are destructive in this manner; You get used to something and you either like it or not. If you like it and use, then often these "improvements" are a bed of thorns that destroy your enjoyment.
Microsoft is probably the greatest perpetrator of such things. All in all, I find these things a PITA.
