Playmobile Diesel Engine

Hi,
I have a red Playmobil Diesel engine, the motor runs really well, but the gear worms at the end of each shaft do not engage with the gear wheels on the engine wheels. I have successfully taken the engine apart and can see the shafts of the wheels sit in small cutouts, but cannot understand why they will not turn when the motor does.
any ideas would be appreciated.

Is the motor properly seated? Is there something under the motor preventing it from seating properly? Are the things which are connected to the motor seated in the correct places? Are the gears on the wheels intact? Sharing pictures may help.

It ought to be possible to get the motor to rotate by twiddling the worm hear when pushed back in withoutvthe securing parts. Do the wheels rotate then?

there are two small spacers at the ends of the motor, check these have not dropped down and are holding the motor up.
