My 25t has 12 aaa NiMh and has managed 7 hours being switched on with an MLS Sound unit on and odd running with shunting as well. Certainly the extra batteries are well worth stuffing-bin but you do need rechargeable ones and be component to pull apart and rewire it up. Of course as I have not done it not sure how the Piko RC would take to the extra Batteries, but I suspect few issues. This link shows how I did it:-
