Phoenix P8 Sound

Hi. I just received a new Phoenix sound card set up from a supplier in the US. The card has been set for the speed sensor using a wheel sensor. How can I change the card to use the speed controller on my navigator. The manual says to change the CVs. alas the manual dose not show what values to change them to, it shows CV 49 default = 0 CV 50 default = 2 CV51 Default = 100 . In my Phoenix manual it shows CV49 0=speed from triggers; (=/) slash is over the equal sign then 0, speed from DCC. This is very confusing.

Hi Frank,

A little confusing I know, so here goes..

CV 49
If = 0 then 'speed' (or chuffs) is controlled by a trigger input on pin 11.
If not equal to 0 (ie. 1) then the 'speed' setting is derived from the DCC signal.
Default value for CV 49 is 0 for a card set for steam, and 1 for a card set for diesel.

CV50
This is the DCC value (speed step) at which motion starts.
Default value is 2.
If the loco is tight/sluggish, it may require more than 2 steps before it moves, and so this CV should then be set higher. - Also a compromise if the loco is heavily loaded, as it may take more 'oomph' to get it moving!

CV51
The DCC Rate (speed vs. throttle). - How fast it chuffs versus how fast the loco is running.
Default is 100.

CV52
Seconds to simulate DCC if DCC signal is lost. - 'Keep-alive' if you like..
Default is 0, which is forever (keep going).

CV53
Seconds in idle before shutdown.
Default is 0, never shutdown. - So you get side-noises, or diesel tickover, forever.

NOTE:
The above from a PB11 manual, as I do not have a PB8 manual to hand. Believed to ne the same.

One 'gotcha' to be aware of..
If you have (say) a Massoth decoder for the motors, then you need to isolate the two decoders from each other when making changes.

As an example;
CV 50 is the 'divider' for the light output voltage on a Massoth decoder, and the starting voltage for the Phoenix 'chuff'..

If you change CV 50 with both decoders powered, you are not sure which one will change (could be either one, or both). This usually means you have to 'open the hood' to make changes.

You probably know this, but there may well be some who have not thought about it.
