Oh! I hadn't thought about crosswinds even with us recently having had some 30 and 40mph (48 to 64kph) gusts making for awkward crosswinds on the nearby Interstate Highway.

The beeg eessue in model form is the pivoting, and the overhang. I would have thought that it's probably impossible even on my larger 10ft curves, certainly the 8fts would be a challenge with three flats. Could emulate something with just two wagons :mm::mm:

I think there could be a by-product problem with sharp curves, and that would be the geometry - the girder would need to slide forwards / backwards on its mounts :worried::worried:

it turns out articulated girders are a thing, and space age too ...

Yes, the beauty of a timber truss is that you can construct it on site, not necessarily pre-fab it.

Sort of back to the concept of the US narrow gauge and short lines with Carter bros ;)
 
I've built a boxcar a couple of inches longer than a Bachmann Spectrum passenger car - had to realign a section of track to get it round a bend where the rock face protruded too far...
