Give yourself a treat and read the book, subtly different from the movie as was the Radio Program and the Records. Oh and the TV program.

Douglas Adams on where the name came from
-

I though that this character should be a dignified, elderly man, weighed down with the burden of a secret sorrow. I wondered what this sorrow should be, and thought perhaps he might be sad about his name. So I decided to give him a name that anybody would be sad to have. I wanted it to sound as gross as it possibly could, while still being broadcastable. So I started with something that was clearly completely unbroadcastable, which was PHARTIPHUKBORLZ, and simply played around with the syllables until I arrived at something which sounded that rude, but was almost, but not quite, entirely inoffensive.

I used to work in sales for Canon copier's national accounts operation, for most of the '90's. The sales team was split into two sectors, Private Sector and Government contracts (and for very good reasons). I don't know why but I dubbed the head of the Government group.......Slartibartfarst. Well, it seemed to fit his general demenor, bit of a slippery chancer. At an Xmas lunch meeting, about a month ago, of old members of that team I mentioned that nickname. Everybody there recognised the person and his nickname but nobody, 25 years on, could remember his real name, including myself. It seems it stuck. Or, is it a sign of senile demntia ? Max

P.S. At one point I was asked by my manager at Canon "Do you want to handle the London UndergrounD Ltd contract ?" Did I ? Do bears........
