I have been messing about for some time with my own lettering on Rolling Stock. At first I used photo paper and mounted it on by using photo mount. Now I have discovered Self Adhesive Ink Jet Paper.

I am not sure how weather resistant it will be, but it certainly quickly transforms your stock without any long term damage so far as I can tell. This is the stuff:-

Here are some examples of just one of my (no detail of maker) coaches that I have done. The first pic is of the sheet with a few of the 'Plates' cut out and attached to the coach. There are also new 'Plates' for my steam tram conversion (upside down).

These three are of the coach in question:-

There are a few points to bear in mind when doing these:-
1 Use a CAD package of some sort so that you get get your size correct.
2 It is a bit tricky to remove the backing paper from the sheet when you have cut them to size. use a modelling knife.
3 I use a felt tip pen to colout the sides of the cut out sheets to match the Black ends of the 'Plates'.
4 In prototypical terms, my line gets its stock from other railway Companies so always replates its stock with Enamel plates.

Hope this is of some use.

Been raining today so have been up to some more work in the loft. Have finished all the coaches from the last post. Also done these two, now they were Zillertall coaches that I got of a very nice man in this forum. I needed them to go with a Swiss Mountain Line. So discovered a closed one near Brig and re-lettered them for that.
This shows the starting point:-

This being after the re-lettering.

A point of interest in this, there we are some Rivets in a very awkward point on these coaches. So before putting on the Plate I impressed the Rivets on the printout of the plate, then with a center punch (and a large hammer) impressed them some more to get them to fit nice and flat on the rivets. Worked a treat. Also your stock can be returned to its origins in a trice, should you need to sell them.

Finally I decided to redo my Steam Tram. I was never very happy with the original Letter Plates as the Black had been low on my printer and they came out purple. I also decided to cut round the Works plate which i think makes it look much better. Before:-
