New Building for Silberhütte

Many moons ago well around a Year or two before the Ruschbahn was demolished in 2013 Andy built this Engine Shed. This is the only Pic I have been able to find of it despite extensive searches of many of my and Andrew’s Pics. This was in the day that Andy decided to have a Military Train and sundry Wagons are stored by the Shed prior to being shunted out over the Turntable for onwards working on the Special Train.

The Shed ultimately became mine but sadly I could find no place for it so it was converted into a 2 Story Factory, here is the final picture of it prior to removal this week. Note that there were no Windows or detail on the unseen side of the first picture. Andy never wasted good Modelling time in things that could not be seen.

It had stood up outside quite well considering that it was Paper Covered Foamboard. The surface had been Water Proof PVA’d then coated with Silica Sand. When dry the surplus shaken off and a coat of Halfords Rattle Can Matt Grey applied. This in no small way assisted with its reasonable life. But as they say every Shed has it’s day and removal was required. The Doors, Roof and Loading Platforms were made out of HIPS Plastic.

A new Start has been made on a replacement.

Having started on the Brick Scribing yesterday the Brickwork part of what will be a Part Relief Building has been done for that part of what will be a modest complex of 2 Buildings. The Brickwork has had an intitial Spray of Matt Grey then Bautista Undercoat Red which in my mind is more a Bricklike colour. Clearly lots of weathering and picking out of Bricks will be required. I have used 5mm PVC Coated Foamboard for the Building and 3mm for the Stone / Woodwork as this sits nicely onto Peco Chairs without fouling the Track. Additional spare sleepers have been added to the rear support to keep the Base at a level just below the Rail Height.

As a clue to what I am intening to effect, the following 3 pictures indicate a look rather than a slavish indicative view of what I am building.



The building is a Barrel Making Plant and in effect is actually the other end of where I am putting it. But my Silberhütte is such a compromise that in truth I am beyond caring about a minor matter of location.

A little more movement today, bases have been sprayed their initial starting colour. Also I have ondering Roof for the Brick Building. This old sad House has been looking for a home ever since I got it at a knock down built price at GRS many moons ago. It has always been outside but never found a proper home on my last or even this layout. It shows signs of varying attempts to repair it as well, some by me others by the original owner. I had intended to use it on ET as a disguise for the Switch Levers but that plan did not pan out.

So it’s time has come as a Roof Donor for the latest project. Perhaps cut up and messed about lots more of it may come in more useful than I thought, it was nearly Bin time just a week ago! Here you can see the cut off Roof being held in place on the part Relief Brick Part of the project.

The next bit is that Wooden Supported Loading Valance, it will have a back of Black PVC Coated Foamboard, bit of a waste but the blackness inside may hide a multitude of sins or nothing! Here is the back with some initial Timber to glue the V shaped Rood to at the rear.

The front edge will cover the Siding and be supported by Wood as in the prototype pictures. I do not have too many worrries about the life of Wood in this location as it will be covered and sit on Foamboard thus hopefully not getting too much Wetness about it. Work stopped for a few days while sorting out itenerant Locomotives oh and having a Running day. May get going again this week now that they are both sorted.

Been tribbleing away at the Woodwork, always a slow job as I like the External Grade PVA to fully dry before the next piece. I know that there are other options but I likes me PVA and the joint on wood tends to be stronger than the wood itself.

I have done most of the Woodwork and am now pondering a Roof. The real thing has Corrugated of some sort so perhaps a few of Sheeba’s (my Dog before Barney) old Food Tins May be utilised. As shown in the next pic I have a good stock ready rusted.

The curve is got rid of my Heating to Cherry Red then plonking a socking great Steel Lump on it. The Brick Part has been attached to its base and had some more painting done. Also to do is a severe distressing of the Red to make the building look old as in the Prototype Pics. I see a watery mix of Yellow and Whir=the being involved in this process.

At Peterborough I will be on the lookout for some Largish Scale Wooden Barrels as this plant was involved with the making of them. Steve Warrington used to do a nice line in them so I already have a couple of Wagon Loads to run out of this Factory.

So today I finally got the Corrugated Roof onto the part of the Buildings that needed it. Spent the other day Heating up and flattening former Dog Food Tins that I still have in plenty from my last Dig Sheba. Seen 2 pics up, the Tins that is. I originally started Soldering the tops on with Nails and Cut Pieces of Brass. But found that Bent up Wire worked better so the Roof is held on with a mixture. Once it has all Rusted some more and Weathered it should blend in just fine. Pics below show in place.

All that is now needed are some more full sized Barrels and bits that would make them. Plans involve Casting with Resin a process that I have been long delaying are being cogitated.

We had a bit of a disaster with this at the first running session after being fitted. The uprights on the second part of the building were being given side swipes by Vans and even Opens were a bit tricky. This caused the Yard Master some serious consternation as the Yard was very full of Wagons that day. No matter a few days later I moved the bit on the right back by the equivalent of 2 Planks and all is now well.

In the intervening period I have been using 2 Part Casting Resin to create a load of 1/2 and full Barrells plus some Barrel Tops that can be seen littering the Siding. These have now all been fitted as well as some odd bits of wood that would make up the Barrells, so the site is now pretty much completed.

Thanks Phil, I have still not quite got my Resin Casting Techniques to perfection yet, too many blow holes for my liking. But at least from normal viewpoint some 2ft away they hardly notice. Only the brutal close up of the Camera gives the game away.
