I have always been interested in steam engines but never thought I could have a steam railway of my own.At the front of our bungalows it is open plan so I could not build one there and at the back there is just a yard.I have been very lucky as my friends Annieshalt and Pauly have asked me down to run my engines on their layouts.
But all that was to change when I bought my wife an LGB Corpet for her birthday this year, she enjoyed running her engine at Annieshalt so much she wanted a little railway of her own and when a woman wants something she usually gets it.
So the shed was moved and the building began.

WELCOME TO THE FROG AND FERRET RAILWAY.....:D all built by herself.....

Well done Helen!

If only I could persuade Mizzy Gizzy to take a similar level of interest in my hobby. Then again, maybe not!

What are the 'tables' used for the 'baseboard' please Allan?

They are made from heavy duty shelf units that we used to use in our shop, which were made redundant on our retirement, these were then covered with decking board.

Clever stuff that- really like the use of those shelving units. How stable are they? Would be ideal for easy to store smaller scale layouts too (stop giving me ideas...)

Brilliant use of the shelving units - I've bought loads of them in the past to rack-out my workshop, you can get them from most DIY stores and each 5-shelf set would yield 4 sections with legs to use as layout benches. If you are using the heavy-duty ones rather than the cheap domestic type, then I'd think they'd be pretty stable, especially if strapped together with cable ties round the legs.

Helen was able to use all 5 shelves as the legs are 1.5"diameter this is the same diameter as kitchen wastepipe,so we bought some lengths of this and cut it to size.If you look on the picture, all the white legs are waste pipe.

Don't you just hate it when....

You've just built a ground level layout because you couldn't think of a cost-effective way to have it at waist height......

and then someone goes and posts a thread showing an amazing solution!

Just brilliant. Well done to both of you.

Thought you said you bought it for the Mrs? Not that anyone else here would buy something for family/kids/friends/the labrador and then [strike]play[/strike] test it themselves. Oh no we wouldn't :D
