Hi,

I need a motor and gear box to drive a ¼?? axle. GRS do some, but anyone know of others? Also what?s the difference between sing and double reduction gearing, apart from £40?

May give you lower speed of rotation on the final drive shaft. Also makes the drive shaft further away from the motor - useful if you have a high up boiler which the motor sits in.

These guys probably have whet you need

Funnily enough, I had the same thought a while ago and found to my amusement that the axles on the aristocraft locos are 1/4 inch diameter, so that means by carefully drilling though the middle of a gear wheel you can fit an axle, the shaft and gear can then be pinned together, I would imagine the same woulds be true for a steam loco as well but I have not tried that,, I am half way thro trying to adapt an aristo four wheel truck into a six wheeler by this method.

This is how far I have got so far,

I think double reduction also puts less strain on the box if the motor stutters.

If you want the best, I'd go to ABC :thumbup::thumbup:

Drill radially and push roll pins in the holes.
I was thinking along similar lines as well, but wondered about how soft/hard the plastic was, & how tight a fit the plastic sleeve was on the axle, a 'non grip' fit & soft plastic might make for elongation of the holes in the plastic, so thought it might pay to use super glue on axle/ plastic & on the pins
( as long as dismantling is not needed)
