I have a number of locos that were programmed many years ago using the MTS parallel system with minor adjustments when I changed to Massoth

Last year I was forced to upgrade to the 2.4Ghz radio, after upgrades of software and much faffing about I got it to work very well. I have recently bought a used LGB Mallet with DCC and sound and am trying to change its ID.

I am sure it is me doing something wrong and after many hours of trying I am asking for help

Steps Taken

Loco on Programming Track

Navigator Menu – Decoder Programming

selected ‘loco address’ then ‘CV’. delay then ID comes up as ID001 with an ‘X’ to the right of the address. The loco make a short steam sound

On normal track it will not respond when I try to control it by using loco 1 or any other number up to 12

Advice would be welcome please

Read the value of CV29.
It could be the decoder has a long address, and this is enabled within CV29.

The chip may be "Locked" for the like of Massoth chips Cv's 15 & 16 need to be the same value, in order to read/change the other values.
Otherwise you will get the "X" when trying to read/change values. But not sure if that holds true for other makes of chip.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have tried reading the suggested CV's without success. still getting the 'x'
Tomorrow I will try and read the data from one of my other locos to see if it is me doing something daft
The loco is a 21852 Mallet, if no success with checking my other loco I will dismantle and look at the decoder

The chip is locked, if you have the blurb that came with it, check which Cv will re set the lock to open the chip.
Whatever the lock Cv's they both need to be the same value in order to open the chip so you can read and change settings.

The above is a bit long winded, but gives you an idea what I am on about, Be careful not to do a master reset back to factory settings, unless you want that to start again.

Does it have a decoder? Read CV 8

Thanks for the suggestions, I can read OK on one of my other engines so my method is OK.
I am unable to get anything bur error 'x's
When dismantling the loco I find it is a 22852 Mallet not as thought
Seeing another thread about fitting an emotion XL to a Mallet, I think I will go down this route as I have an XLS that has not been used. It was bought the fit in a Brawa G4/5 but never used as I kept it on display
Question Where is the best place to get the sound files changed?

As far as I can see the 22852 Mallet was orginally delivered as digital with sound (serial decoder). Did you check the position on the four-way power control switch inside the cab? It should be in position 2 or 3 (counting goes like this: 0, 1, 2, 3) in order to have the motor connected - which is required for the programming to have a feedback.

The 22852 was manufactured in the late 90's and was produced after the 22851, therefore the 22851 could have had 2 decoders as the dual motor decoder came later (55027).
Is it possible that this loco is old enough to have the 55020 pair or 55021? First 55020 was a LENZ decoder and only had limited capability. LENZ had their logo etched on the decoder. Massoth made 3 versions of the 55020.
