"I suspect that the functions may be varied from on/off to momentary..."

Neil, sorry to be dense but does momentary mean that if, for example, I press F1 on my Navigator the whistle only sounds as long as F1 is actually pressed?

Thanks

I'm rather new to DC myself but I'm pretty sure that is one possibility.
Another would be it runs for a set time and then stops, as for example, the station announcement available on some sound decoders.

Momentary action means it sends a command to 'fire' the function for a short period.. Latching (the other option) means just that..
Normally, 'momentary' will send the command as long as you have your finger on the button. It then depends how the decoder has been told to respond to this..
A whistle (for example) could be set to play a sequence, then stop. Or it could be set to whistle until you take your finger off the button.
